Description of Library
Library Special Collections is a new department created by the integration of five formerly separate units: Charles E. Young Research Library Department of Special Collections, University Archives, Performing Arts Special Collections, the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library History of Science and Medicine Special Collections, and the Center for Oral History Research. The Head of LSC Collection Management will be responsible for building an integrated and coordinated approach to accessioning, processing, cataloging, and preserving the holdings of all units in the department. The incumbent will be responsible for managing collection materials across the entire continuum of special collections, including rare book, manuscript, and archival holdings, and will employ a thorough understanding of the professional standards and practices necessary to organize, describe, and preserve rare materials in all formats.
Position Duties
Reporting to the Director of Library Special Collections, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
§ Develops and implements a programmatic approach for processing and cataloging new acquisitions and backlog holdings across all curatorial units of LSC and in all formats.
§ Hires, supervises, and trains cataloging and archival processing staff.
§ Sets processing and cataloging priorities in consultation with curators, librarians, and other staff.
§ Reviews finding aids, catalog records, and other descriptive output to ensure quality and adherence to standards.
§ Participates in grant writing efforts by creating work plans and developing budgets for processing and cataloging projects.
§ Develops and implements methods for measuring standard costs related to processing and cataloging, which can be used for project management, planning, and grant writing.
· Analyzes processing and cataloging workflows and implements improvements.
· Directly supervises 6 FTE and indirectly supervises 2 FTE as well as project and student staff.
· With staff, develops standard methods for establishing physical and legal custody of new acquisitions and ensures all new collections receive preliminary processing and cataloging.
· Develops and implements comprehensive plan to effectively appraise, process, and catalog LSC backlog collections.
· Oversees the creation, revision, and maintenance of documentation of policies, practices, and procedures that guide processing, cataloging, and preservation work.
· Collaborates with curators, librarians, the Digital Library Program, and Cataloging and Metadata department to provide online access to LSC holdings.
· Explores, proposes, and implements new technologies that streamline collection management processes and facilitate researcher access to the holdings of LSC.
· Works with Library Preservation and Conservation staff to ensure LSC holdings receive proper care and treatment.
· Participates in collection development, reference, and instructional activities as needed.
§ Works with other senior management staff in LSC on long-range planning, annual goal setting, and policy and procedure development.
Required Qualifications
§ ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR an advanced degree in an appropriate subject discipline with relevant special collections or archival training.
§ Minimum of three years professional experience as a librarian or archivist, with recent experience in a special collections repository.
§ Demonstrated experience in supervising other employees.
§ Knowledge of professional standards and practices relating to rare materials cataloging and appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of manuscript and archival holdings.
§ Extensive experience processing manuscript and archival holdings and/or cataloging rare books and printed materials.
· Demonstrated capability and proficiency with personal computers and software, the Internet and library-relevant information technology.
§ Experience with and/or knowledge of the professional standards and practices related to accessioning, processing, cataloging, and preserving special collections materials, including rare books, visual materials, manuscripts, and archival holdings
§ Knowledge of the following descriptive standards: the DCRM rule books, DACS, AACR2, RDA, MARC, EAD, EAC, MODS, METS, LCNAF, LCSH, and other thesauri.
§ Demonstrated experience articulating vision and goals and managing multiple projects and staff members to accomplish the work of a unit
§ Experience implementing new technologies and other techniques to improve work processes.
§ Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleagues.
§ Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills.
§ Ability to work with varied user groups and function effectively in a team environment within a complex academic organization.
§ Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork among colleagues.

Desired Qualifications
§ Experience working with Archivists Toolkit and Voyager.
§ Extensive experience working with Audio/Visual materials and/or born digital holdings.
