The UCLA Library seeks an innovative and service-oriented professional to lead and manage the public services operations of its Department of Library Special Collections (LSC).
Description of Institution and Library
Library Special Collections is a new department created by the integration of five formerly separate units: Charles E. Young Research Library Department of Special Collections, University Archives, Performing Arts Special Collections, the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library History of Science and Medicine Special Collections, and the Center for Oral History Research. The Head of Library Special Collections Public Services will be responsible for building an integrated and coordinated approach to planning, organizing, staffing, and evaluating public services. Public services include reference, access, instruction and outreach among the five newly integrated units that together form an enterprise-wide special collections department.
Position Duties
Reporting to the Director of Library Special Collections, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:
§ With the Director of Library Special Collections and other library employees, analyzes space, staffing, existing policies and procedures, and technology infrastructure to develop and implement an integrated approach to public services activities across five formerly independent special collections units.
§ Directly supervises the Manager of Reader Services and indirectly supervises 2 – 3 FTE career staff and approximately 4 FTE student assistants.
§ Works with faculty and library employees to develop and administer an instructional outreach program that features the holdings of Library Special Collections and supports the teaching mission of the university.
§ Reviews, develops, and documents policies and procedures that govern the use of special collections holdings.
§ Works with colleagues in LSC, Library Administration, and Digital Collections Services to ensure all intellectual property concerns relating to the use of collections are addressed. Within established legal and policy frameworks, promotes open access to special collections materials.
§ Explores, proposes, and implements new technologies that facilitate researcher access to the holdings of LSC.
§ Participates in the direct delivery of research services, including taking regular shifts on reference desks and providing classroom instruction.
§ Works with other senior management employees in LSC on long-range planning, annual goal setting, and policy and procedure development.
§ Collaborates with curatorial and technical services staff in LSC and librarians in the Collections, Research and Instructional Services department
§ Participates actively in the archives, special collections, and library profession to ensure that UCLA’s LSC remains aware of current developments in research and instruction for special collections and adopts and contributes to the development of relevant standards.
Required Qualifications
§ ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR an advanced degree in an appropriate subject discipline with relevant special collections or archival training.
§ Three years of professional experience as a librarian or archivist, with recent experience in a special collections repository.
§ Demonstrated experience with providing reference and instructional services within a special collections setting.
§ Demonstrated experience in supervising other employees.
§ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, library users, and library colleagues.
§ Demonstrated understanding of the scholarly use of library collections and services and of current developments in archives and special collections librarianship.
§ Evidence of a strong service orientation.
§ Knowledge of intellectual property issues related to archives, libraries, and special collections.
§ Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleagues.
§ Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology applications.
§ Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software.
§ Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills.
§ Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork among colleagues.
§ Capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a world-class research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.

§ Demonstrated experience with implementing new technologies in a special collections environment.
§ Working knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
