Position: Instruction/Reference Librarian

Starting Date: November 1, 2011

The California State University, Los Angeles, Library seeks an energetic, innovative, enthusiastic, and technologically knowledgeable librarian to participate and collaborate in the Library's extensive information literacy liaison program, including planning, teaching, and assessing library sessions for specific CSULA classes and workshops.

Will serve as a subject specialist liaison to academic departments and other programs in the areas of collection development and instruction.  Provide reference and research assistance during regularly scheduled hours at the Reference Desk, online, and by appointment for students, staff, and faculty.  Reference responsibilities include some evening and weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications: MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited library school.  Demonstrated strong user services orientation and enthusiasm for public service.  Knowledge of instructional and reference methods.  Demonstrated potential for effective teaching.  Proven ability and experience in using academic electronic and print resources.  Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in English.  Ability to work independently and within a team setting.  Demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications: Experience in an academic library.  Demonstrated teaching experience and familiarity with information literacy standards and outcomes as they reflect current library teaching practice.  Experience with learning management software (e.g., Moodle).  Experience in creating and maintaining web pages and/or using authoring and presentation software.  An advanced degree, substantial coursework or background/work experience in the social sciences and/or education.

Salary Range: Initial salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Position at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian.  This is a full-time, temporary appointment at the rank of Sr. Assistant Librarian. Appointment through June 30, 2012, with the possibility of extension.

Job Summary    

The Collection Management Unit (Library Technical Services) is responsible for the acquisition and ongoing disposition of all materials in all formats acquired for the Library’s collections for use by the UCSF community. The Subscriptions Assistant performs specialized duties requiring technical library skills at the advanced operational level or paraprofessional library skills, as well as a general knowledge of library practices and procedures. Operates within a complex unit responsible for multiple library activities including collection development, acquisitions, serials processing, cataloging, and database maintenance. The Subscriptions Assistant is primarily responsible for supporting the timely and accurate receipt, check-in, routing, claiming, and binding of library print journals. Once familiar with the print journal processes, the incumbent will be trained to respond to online subscription queries, and to help with collections projects which involve understanding bibliographic data pertaining to library materials. Tasks are performed within the guidelines and procedures established by Collection Management.

 

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate to the academic setting in order to develop and maintain effective working relations with diverse groups such as vendor representatives, publishers, library users, staff, students and faculty. The incumbent is expected to maintain a professional and considerate demeanor and to work at the level of the Collection Management Unit’s stated production levels. The incumbent may be called upon to back-up other tasks assigned to the unit during scheduled and unscheduled absences. All staff in Collection Management are expected to demonstrate a strong Customer-Service focus and the ability to adapt and respond to the Library’s users’ needs; and perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications              

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; 3 years in library technical services or other pertinent library work; experience and demonstrated competence in the use of standard office software; experience and demonstrated competence in the use of standard library databases and tools; excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate to the academic setting in order to develop and maintain effective working relations with diverse groups such as vendor representatives, publishers, library users, staff, students and faculty; work well with others in a team environment; loaded library book truck; bend, reach, stoop; demonstrated Customer-Service skills; ability for accuracy and attention to pertinent details; well developed skills in problem solving; flexibility and good judgment to effectively adapt to changing technologies and conditions in the Library and publishing environment; effectively communicate in English verbally and in writing; requires bending, squatting, climbing stairs; pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds; reaching above shoulder level; sitting, standing, walking; carrying/lifting 20 pounds; gripping/grasping; repetitive movements of upper extremities.

Experience with Innovative’s Millennium Serials and Acquisitions modules; experience with print journal check-in, tracking, claiming, processing, and holdings maintenance; experience with library bindery processing; experience with vendor web-based utilities; experience with electronic resources.

Position Description: 

As a member of the Information & Research Services Department at the Hubert Library of Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC), the Science & Health Sciences Librarian has primary liaison responsibility for providing services and resources to science and health sciences students and faculty at BBC (excluding the College of Medicine). The Science & Health Sciences Librarian at BBC will also collaborate closely with both the Science & Engineering Librarian and the Health Sciences Librarian at Modesto Maidique Campus. JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instruction & E-Learning

      Coordinates and oversees a library instruction program based on the library's mission and goals.

      Collaborates with library and teaching faculty and other partners to apply learning theories and technologies in the development, design, implementation, and maintenance of general and course-specific library instruction materials, including online learning objects and instructional modules.

      Produces digital learning objects that are interactive, pedagogically sound, engaging to students, and facilitates the integration and use of library resources in course management systems and other online environments.

      Identifies, implements, and promotes innovative online tools and services for both on-campus and off-campus learners.

      Conducts formal assessment of the Instruction and Information Literacy program

      Assesses the effectiveness and usability of online learning objects and other library instructional materials in improving student learning outcomes.

      Collaborates in the support and training of librarians in the use of new learning technologies.

 

General Reference & Instruction:

      Develops and conducts online and in-person library instruction sessions.

      Serves as a liaison to one or more academic departments and performs campus departmental liaison duties.

      Provides reference services, including some evenings and weekends, to diverse user groups in person, by phone, email, IM, etc.

 

Scholarship, Service, & Professional Development:

      Participates in scholarship, faculty governance, and service as a library faculty member.

      Works cooperatively on library-wide initiatives as appropriate to position functions.

      Actively participates in local, state, national, and international meetings and organizations.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

      MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
