Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries seeks candidates for the Head of Circulation & Collection Maintenance Unit within the Collections & Resource Sharing Department (CRSD). This is a key management position at OSU Libraries in an innovative and collaborative environment.  The Head of Circulation & Collection Maintenance Unit uses his/her knowledge of current and emerging circulation and collection management to provide outstanding customer service for a diverse population of library users   He/she works closely with other (CRSD) units of collections, acquisitions and inter-library loans to ensure that library users have the information/resources they need for learning, teaching and research.   Additionally, he/she works closely with the Learning Commons service providers and other Valley Library departments as well as the Guin Library at the Hatfield Marine Science Center and OSU Cascades to align circulation and collection maintenance services to the OSU community.  The Head of Circulation & Collection Maintenance has responsibility for the supervision of 7 FTE classified staff and 10 -20 student assistants who are responsible for the smooth flow of materials through the library and offsite storage facility, and have responsibility for maintaining the physical collection of 1.7 million volumes.

Job Requirements:

 

·         Bachelor degree required; Master’s in Library Science degree preferred

·         Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with all levels of staff and management.

·         The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, writing and communication skills.

·         Superior skill and ability in multi-tasking and prioritizing.

·         Ability to adapt to a changing environment and to approach problems with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm and innovation in a collaborative team environment.

·         Self-motivated with proven ability to effectively work with diverse personalities in a dynamic and demanding environment.

·         Must have proficiency in web-based proprietary databases (e.g. Capital IQ, Factiva, LexisNexis, Dialog, Thomson Research), electronic, print, and library resources.

·         Experience using Bloomberg or Factset is a plus.

·         4-7 years of research experience in a law or corporate library environment

·         Proficient with Microsoft Office applications

Position Description

 

 

Cataloging Services supports library patrons by providing bibliographic access and control through both metadata and traditional cataloging. Cataloging Services is closely integrated with the other departments within Technical Services and utilizes a flexible workflow approach. The Metadata/Catalog Librarian serves as a member of the team responsible for providing original,  adjusted and copy cataloging and bibliographic control for a wide range of print and non-print materials in various formats A strong commitment to service and patron access to information is essential.  The position reports to the Acting Assistant Director of Technical Services, with the Dean of University Libraries as second-line supervisor.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

1.         Creates or adjusts catalog records for materials in all formats so they conform to national and local standards and practices.  Performs associated authority control work as appropriate.

 

2.         Participates in the planning, implementation and monitoring of digital projects.  Creates templates for digitized collections in our repositories using standardized metadata schemas. Works with subject experts, cataloging staff and /or students to create records for digitized materials.  Compiles statistics as needed.

 

3.         Resolves bibliographic problems associated with, but not limited to, books, serials and non-print materials in all formats.

 

4.         Collaborates with staff and department heads across the Libraries to implement cross-functional initiatives. 

 

5.         Writes and maintains documentation relevant to the cataloging projects they are assigned.

 

6.         Working with the Acting Assistant Director of Technical Services, participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of cataloging operations and workflows to expedite the efficient processing of library materials.

 

7.         Keeps abreast of current national and international developments and trends in cataloging, classification and subject analysis, bibliographic and authority control, and automation of cataloging functions.

 

8.          Participates in professional activities and committee assignments within the library, on campus, and in professional associations.

 

Qualifications:

Required:    MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution; familiarity with cataloging practices including knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations, Library of Congress subject heading practice, and MARC21; experience with at least one non-MARC metadata schema; ability to work individually as well as in groups; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong computer skills; knowledge of current trends in cataloging and the willingness to work with new concepts and technologies; working knowledge of one or more non-English languages and  a commitment to providing a high level of support services.  Candidates should show evidence of professional growth, service activities and contributions to the library profession to meet faculty criteria for promotion and tenure.

Must have ALA accredited MLS by January 1, 2011.

 

Desired:     Advanced degree or graduate coursework; experience with institutional repositories; advanced knowledge of metadata schemas; experience with project planning, experience with OCLC and/or ExLibris; proficiency in a non-English language.

The Libraries’ are wireless throughout and we have a successful library laptop lending program.

Oregon State University Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented librarian to assist in the shaping of a new department focused on user-centered collection services and programs. Responsible for the overall management of the Collections and Resource Sharing Department’s programs and services, the Head of the CRSD leads a staff and faculty committed to fulfilling the learning, teaching and research needs of the OSU community. The Department Head directs the expenditure of the Libraries’ approximately $5 million materials budget, supervises 7.0 faculty FTE and has oversight for a department with approximately 20.0 classified FTE across the 4 units which comprise the Department:  Collection Development, Acquisitions, Interlibrary Loan, and Access Services (Circulation and Collection Maintenance).    The Department Head leads a variety of initiatives related to collaborative and user-driven collection building, resource sharing, document delivery, and access services. She/he monitors trends in collection development, acquisitions, resource sharing, access services, and collection maintenance.  

Additionally, the Department Head tracks issues surrounding scholarly communication and works with other OSU librarians to communicate these issues within the Library and to campus faculty. In consultation with the AUL for Collections and Content Management and CRSD unit heads, the Department Head develops policy pertaining to collection development, acquisitions, access services, and resource sharing. The Department Head determines strategic direction for the Department, establishes departmental goals, and encourages and tracks goal progress. The Department Head is a member of the Libraries’ management team and contributes to the overall planning and management of the Libraries.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Serves as liaison librarian to the undergraduate and graduate Psychology programs. Develops collegial and collaborative partnerships with the psychology faculty and the library staff to provide excellent reference, consultation, and other support services in a Learning Commons environment. Envisions and develops innovative approaches to instruction, information literacy, collection building, information service, outreach, and assessment. Develops a sophisticated understanding of psychology research methods and information resources. Develops subject guides, web pages, and other creative materials to support instruction. Participates in service and scholarship. Position reports to the Assistant Director of Public Services in Carrier Library.  

Qualifications:

MLS from an ALA-accredited institution. Demonstrated commitment to student success and to collaborative ventures with discipline faculty and library staff. At least two to three years of experience in public services, reference, and instruction is preferred. Strong knowledge of traditional and electronic reference sources. Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Strong understanding of psychology collection development practices, resources, and trends. Ability to manage a variety of projects and shifting priorities in a fast-paced and changing environment. A Master's Degree in psychology or recent successful experience in psychology librarianship is preferred.

Salary commensurate with experience. Tenure-track faculty position with excellent benefits including 20 days of vacation and a choice of TIAA/CREF or other retirement plans.
