Background

In support of a new University-wide records management policy, Drexel University Archives will launch an ambitious effort to document the records that are created across the institution.  The Libraries will reach out to academic departments and administrative offices to promote the long-term protection of and access to digital and print materials.

 

Job Overview

Drexel University Libraries seeks an archivist to identify, acquire and preserve the University's print and electronic records of enduring historic value. This new position will raise awareness among campus creators of knowledge about the impermanence of university records, particularly those in electronic formats, advising on all phases of the life cycle of digital content with the aim of long-term retention and access. The archivist will identify and implement the tools needed to engage Drexel records creators in the ongoing process of ensuring access to the vital records of the university. The archivist will play a key role in building the Libraries' digital archives and participate in efforts to establish the Libraries as a locus of digital knowledge. The Records Management Archivist reports to the University Archivist as part of the University Archives and Special Collections staff.

 

Qualifications

ALA-accredited MSLIS or equivalent degree required; concentration in archives preferred

Familiarity with the functions of an archives, library or information organization; archives experience preferred

Familiarity with managing and preserving electronic records and leading digitization projects; experience preferred

Familiarity with outreach and acquisitions; experience demonstrated by previous success in expanding user base or collections preferred

Excellent project management skills and service orientation

Familiarity with managing digital assets; experience preferred

Experience working in a collaborative environment, including working with people with diverse backgrounds.

Broad demonstrated knowledge of academic libraries preferred.

Sound judgment and the ability to handle responsibilities with both discretion and independence.

Demonstrated appropriate initiative with the highest degree of integrity and professionalism.

Demonstrated ability to drive multiple complex projects simultaneously.

Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

Strong commitment to team-based management and quality service; ability to embrace change. 

 

Essential Functions

Identify and acquire or facilitate access to Drexel archival digital assets of enduring administrative and historical value in various formats

Advise and consult University records creators on records retention; update University retention schedules to document records of historical value across campus

Recruit and develop new users of Archives collections and services

Research, plan, and develop the digital preservation program for the University Libraries' collections of enduring value in digital format

Manage digitization of University records in response to patron needs

Work with Head of Metadata Services to provide better access to digital collections via metadata

Communicate with diverse populations and participate on committees and teams with members of diverse backgrounds

Pursue professional growth

Perform additional duties as assigned

Associate University Librarian for Research and Scholarly Communication

Oregon State University Libraries

 

Oregon State University Libraries seeks an innovative, dynamic, and experienced library leader to join the organization’s senior leadership team.  The Associate University Librarian for Research and Scholarly Communication will shape the Libraries’ digital library strategies as they advance the development and communication of scholarly research and further the University’s goal of becoming a top ten land-grant institution. As a member of the senior management team, the AUL for Research and Scholarly Communication will contribute to long-range planning, program development and evaluation, resource development, budget formulation, and allocation of resources in support of the Libraries’ mission.  He/she will work with department heads to identify and implement the strategic directions for the Center for Digital Scholarship and Services, Emerging Technologies and Services, University Archives, and Special Collections.  The AUL must demonstrate a strong commitment to the collaborative development and implementation of innovative digital and web initiatives and services that respond adroitly to all users’ evolving needs as researchers and scholars.  

OSU Libraries has nearly 2 million volumes and vast digital resources including ScholarsArchive@OSU (the 4th ranked single-university repository in the U.S.), internationally recognized digital collections like the Oregon Explorer natural resources digital library, and an agile development environment which has produced the LibraryFind™ metasearch application, the Library à la Carte Content Management System and other digital initiatives to serve the university’s 24,000 students, faculty scholars and researchers, and the public.  OSU Libraries is a member of the Orbis/Cascades Alliance of Northwest universities and colleges, which has a total of more than 9 million holdings.

The OSU Libraries’ Special Collections include the Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Papers as the cornerstone for collections on the history of science and technology in the 20th century.  University Archives collections record the history of OSU and include the Oregon Multicultural Archives, which documents the lives and activities of ethnic minority communities in Oregon; and extensive collections pertaining to natural resources in Oregon and the Northwest.  


Required Qualifications:

 

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library program or foreign equivalent.
  • Minimum of seven years increasing responsibility in an academic or research library.
  • Applied knowledge of the principles of library management and organization.
  • Experience with budget operations and strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of new information technologies, evolving models of scholarship, and the presentation of services in the Web environment and the ability to articulate how these influence teaching, learning and scholarship.
  • Strong record of scholarly publication, research and national participation in professional societies suitable for appointment as associate professor
  • Demonstrated commitment to service to all constituencies.
  • A record of accomplishment in dealing with change and mentoring and coaching staff at all levels including successful experience supporting tenure-track faculty.
  • Experience in working with state and/or regional consortia.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • A demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively.
  • Experience managing and administering digital library initiatives and services.
  • Experience with assessment and evaluation techniques, especially as applied to programs and services relevant to position responsibilities

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional graduate degree.
  • Experience working with special collections and archives.
  • Experience participating in a library fundraising and development program, engaging with new and ongoing donors and providing stewardship information to major donors

Curator, John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library

(University title to be Librarian II or III, or Senior Manuscript Specialist)

The St. Louis Mercantile Library at The University of Missouri-St. Louis invites applications for the position of Curator of the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library. This is a 12 month non-tenure track faculty appointment. The Curator reports to the Executive Director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library and works in a team-oriented environment to maintain and to promote the Barriger collections and those of the Mercantile Library. The Curator will combine a passion for transportation history with a strong service orientation, public speaking regarding the collection, fund-raising – including writing grants and the cultivation of in-kind gifts, and reference and collection development duties. Duties will include researching and writing catalogues; the planning, processing, oversight, arrangement and exhibition of collections; traveling to promote, speak and lecture on behalf of the library; handling inquiries from researchers and the public and serving our campus community. This position requires participation in some evening and weekend events. The person in this position may also assume other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: A graduate degree and a minimum of three years experience in a field relevant to the duties of the position; excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong service and collegial, team-focused orientation, and the ability to work with a wide range of individuals, including university faculty, students and staff, visiting scholars, and donors; excellent organizational skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and must be able to negotiate closed stacks to retrieve materials of various weights including those located in off-site locations.

Preferred: A second graduate degree or equivalent work experience, preferably in Library and Information Science, History or Museum Studies; curatorial experience; knowledge of railroads; special collections experience; rare book experience; familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat. Experience working with an advisory board is a plus. 

Salary: Negotiable, dependent upon qualifications. Minimum: $50,000 plus excellent benefits.

understanding of PXE boot and Client Thin technologies. Keen attention to
detail is essential along with the ability to build relationships across
functions.

This is a newly created position to manage the Santa Clara County Library District’s fast-growing virtual services, including the Library website, social media, blogs, eBooks, downloadable media, mobile application, and dozens of online databases. The position is based at the Library Administration offices in Los Gatos, manages the staff of the Virtual Library division, and reports to the Deputy County Librarian for Information Technology and Collection.

 

Santa Clara County Library District is one of the most heavily used and most well funded library systems in the country. The Library is one of eleven libraries nationwide to be included in the top ten libraries in its population category in every published edition of Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings Survey. In addition to a broad range of electronic content and services, the Library District includes seven community libraries and one branch in addition to administrative offices, bookmobile service and a literacy program. Serving a population of 420,000 residents in the heart of Silicon Valley, the Library District circulated over 12.2 million items to over 3.6 million visitors last year. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or Library Science that was obtained from a graduate school accredited by the American Library Association (ALA)

One (1) year experience as journey level Librarian responsible for administering electronic resources.

 

Supervisory or lead experience is desirable.

 

Possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment, and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Driver’s permit.

Principles, practices and techniques of modern public administration, with special reference to organization, personnel management, and budgetary preparation and control;

Principles of management including training, directing, evaluating and supervising subordinates;

Library tools, methods and procedures; classification and cataloging systems and principles;

Principles and techniques of material selection and evaluation to establish balanced library collections;

Web design and web development tools;

Integrated library system functionality;

Library programs and services;

The selection, evaluation and organization of digital library materials.

 

Ability to:

Plan, organize and conduct Library programs for all age groups;

Supervise, train and evaluate subordinate staff;

Advise and instruct patrons in the use of library facilities, reference tools and digital resources;

Demonstrate effective and tactful oral and written communications in serving a wide variety of individuals and diverse communities;

Use library tools effectively;

Analyze community needs and develop programs and policies to meet those needs;

Define problems, collect and process data, and reach valid conclusions to solve problems and develop programs and procedures;

Recommend and/or select library materials for purchase using library selection techniques; Make budget recommendations for program; monitor and control allocated.

 

TYPICAL TASKS

Plans, develops, coordinates, implements, and maintains the Library’s online resources and presence;

Keeps abreast of new trends in information technology and the needs of the community in order to maintain and manage all aspects of the Library’s digital collection;

Recommends digital materials to be purchased or purged;

Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, evaluates and disciplines staff;

Assists in making system policy decisions and developing procedures for the Virtual Library that are compliant with the applicable County’s Information System’s Department (ISD) and American Disabilities Act (ADA) policies;

Assists in selecting vendors, developing service agreements and managing vendor projects in key technical/digital areas;

Leads system-wide committees such as the Database Committee and Bookmarks Committee;

Familiarizes and trains library patrons in the use of digital materials; promotes reading and use of digital resources for all ages;

Gathers and analyzes data for various internal library reports; develops and presents statistical reports on use of electronic resources and the web environment;

Plans, develops organizes, conducts, publicizes and evaluates appropriate programs, products and initiatives;

Collaborates with local educational and community agencies on projectsand presentations; conducts presentations to community groups to promote the Library’s online services;

Assists in the preparation of the annual budget for the County Library; monitors and allocates spending for programs;

Acts as a representative of the Library in providing information to vendors to achieve compatibility with Santa Clara County Library computer systems;

Coordinates the Integrated Library System (ILS) with circulation and information systems staff and develops procedures for use in all outlets;

Collaborates with information technology staff in analyzing and resolving automation problems; evaluates selected software and hardware products and assesses their feasibility;

Participates in professional organizations and attends workshops and meetings;

May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;

Performs other related duties as required.

San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science is recruiting an Assistant Professor in Informatics.  The successful applicant will work in collaboration with faculty in other disciplines to design 100% online graduate courses that will apply Informatics skills to specific knowledge fields (such as health sciences and/or business and/or any other discipline).  The courses will be available to SLIS students as well as graduate students in the partner disciplines.  The new faculty member will also work with partners in other disciplines in collaborative research and fundable grants.
