LIBRARY ASSISTANT I

(PART-TIME)

YOU ARE INVITED TO APPLY:  The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Library are announcing a recruitment for the position of Library Assistant I.  There is currently one part-time vacancy (48 hours biweekly) at the Corte Madera branch.  The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future part-time vacancies that may occur at this and other library locations while the list remains active.  Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six (6) months.

 

TENTATIVE EXAM SCHEDULE:  Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination process may consist of a supplemental application screening, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates’ names will be placed on the eligible list. 

WRITTEN EXAMINATION:      THURSDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2010

ORAL INTERVIEW EXAMINATION:     TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9 & WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2010

 (Tentative Hiring Interview Date by Library Department:  Monday, November 29, 2010)

 

DUTIES:  Duties may include but are not limited to:

¨       Assists patrons with a range of library services both in person and over the telephone; instructs patrons in the use of library equipment, including online computers.

¨       Processes returned items from delivery and book drop; prepares requested materials for patron pick up.

¨       Registers patrons, enters patron information into the library database and issues library cards;

¨       Collects fines and payments for lost materials, accurately records transactions in patron database and accounts for money collected on a daily basis.

¨       Inspects and reports the condition of library materials and equipment; sorts and shelves various types of library materials; maintains shelves in proper order; prepares books, periodicals, newspapers and video and audio materials for circulation; enters materials into circulation database.

¨       Operates computers to enter and retrieve information, locate library materials and charge and discharge library materials.

¨       Opens and closes the library.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDSAny combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed.  Typically, equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of office, retail, or library support work.  Experience using computer systems and Spanish language skills are highly desirable.

Knowledge of:  Customer services techniques and practices; basic practices and procedures of a public library system; standard office practices and procedures; standard telephone use and etiquette; principles and practices for dealing with the public; business arithmetic; basic computer applications related to the work; record keeping practices.

Ability to:  Learn library policies and patron and office procedures; learn to operate varied computer keyboards and to utilize library and other on-line software programs; understand and follow written and oral directions; organize own work and set work priorities; make accurate arithmetic calculations; collect, search, process and interpret basic data; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Other requirements:  Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and at any branch to which assigned.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

All completed application documents will be reviewed. Based on the information provided in these

practical exam, oral interview or any combination of these.

APPEALS PROCEDURE

Applicants may appeal a step in the examination or selection process by submitting a written appeal to the

been mailed. The written statement must include the specific grounds and reasons upon which the
