[LIBJOBS] Terre Haute, United States, Library Director

LIBRARY DIRE CTOR – VIGO COUNTY (IN) PUBLIC LIBRARY

Discover the Possibilities—as the next director of the Vigo County Public Library! The Library Board of Trustees seeks a new leader to help continue and enhance the Library’s successful role as the County’s creative, cultural, and collaborative connection.  The Board wants a director who will work strategically with local organizations and agencies and be responsive to the needs and concerns of staff, customers and the community.  Vigo County Public Library is a separate taxing authority with a tax rate exclusively dedicated to public library services.  Governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, the Library staff of 78 (59 full-time and 19 part-time), serve the 107,848 citizens in Vigo County with a budget of $6.97 million. The Library consists of the Main Library (69,600 sq. ft.) in downtown Terre Haute, a single branch facility (West Terre Haute) and active Outreach and Community Services programs. The challenge for the next Director will be to move forward on the Library's new strategic plan (currently under development) leveraging strong community relationships and partnerships while continuing to provide the outstanding levels of service and programs for the community.

Vigo County is located along the western edge of Indiana bordering Illinois and Terre Haute, the county seat, is at the intersection of two major roadways: US Hwy 40 from California to Maryland, and US Hwy 41 from Michigan to Florida, making downtown’s "7th and Wabash" the Crossroads of America.  This sobriquet is further enhanced by its proximity to other major Midwest cities—only 77 miles southwest of Indianapolis and within 185 miles of Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, and Cincinnati. Terre Haute is home to Indiana State University (ISU) with a student population of approximately 10,500 and the prestigious, private engineering school Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is located just east of the city.  The area also boasts a full-service community college and two private four-year colleges in and around the city.  The Swope Art Museum, Turman Art Gallery on the ISU campus, several galleries, multiple music venues, the Vigo County Historical Society Museum, Children’s Museum and CANDLES Holocaust Museum all add to the cultural fabric of the community.  The Library is a strong local partner and plays a vital role in the community’s development.  Terre Haute’s revitalization efforts were recognized in 2010 when the Indiana Chamber of Commerce named it Indiana's Community of the Year.  Additional information on the Library, the County and the area can be found at Vigo Links.

Responsibilities. The Director reports to a seven-member Library Board of Trustees and works with the Board, staff, and major stakeholders to establish the strategic vision for the Library aligning the Library’s mission, goals and objectives with the community’s needs and priorities. This is complex executive work planning, directing, managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the library, coordinating services and activities with the Board of Library Trustees, local government, academic institutions, and other agencies, ensuring local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations applicable to Indiana libraries and the by-laws, policies, and directives of the Library Board are being met.  See Library Director job description for additional details.

Qualifications. ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science; the ability to obtain and retain an Indiana Librarian Certificate 1; and a minimum of six years of professional experience including a minimum of three years of supervisory and/or management experience. Essential attributes and skills include: vision, creativity, energy and enthusiasm; superior written and oral communications skills; demonstrated success in effectively promoting library services to the community; political acumen; collaborative and consensus-building skills; experience in recruiting, mentoring, evaluating and retaining an excellent staff; and a thorough knowledge of current trends and “best practices” for library service.  Please see the job description for specific detailed information. Ten years of library experience with at least six years of administrative experience and proven success working effectively with a policy-making board is highly desirable.

Compensation.  The starting salary range is $85,000-100,000 (with placement dependent upon experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits package.

Georgetown University; Washington, DC

Georgetown University Library seeks to fill the position of NewJour Project Coordinator. This is a part-time position (20 hours/week) at the Assistant Librarian level.

Contributing to Georgetown University Library's digital initiatives, the NewJour Project Coordinator is responsible for the successful maintenance of NewJour (http://gulib.georgetown.edu/newjour/index.html), an electronic service that monitors the development of electronic journals of interest to the academic community around the world. NewJour's mailing list provides up-to-date information on new scholarly journals, and is a valued resource for researchers worldwide. Usage statistics have shown that the service and site are particularly relevant to scholars in the US, China, India and Brazil. It is therefore essential that continuous service of consistent quality be provided through NewJour.

Responsibility for the project has recently been transferred to the Library, and plans for migrating legacy data, and development of the service are being drafted. [LIBJOBS] Head, Media Cataloging; Bloomington, Indiana; USA

INDIANA UNIVERSITY BLOOMINGTON LIBRARIES

HEAD, MEDIA CATALOGING

ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN/ASSOCIATE LIBRARIAN

Founded in 1820, Indiana University Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university with over 42,000 students and almost 3,000 faculty. Innovation, creativity, and academic freedom are hallmarks of IU Bloomington and its world-class contributions in research and the arts. The campus covers over 1,800 wooded acres and is distinctive for both its park-like beauty and an architectural heritage inspired by local craftsmanship in limestone.

The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) are among the leading academic research library systems in North America, having recently been named the top university library by the Association of College and Research Libraries. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The IU Libraries system consists of eighteen libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the other six campuses across the state. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over 900 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content.

The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository. IU is the principal investigator for Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE) and is working with academic library partners to develop a next generation open source library management

Indiana University Bloomington has achieved international recognition among film scholars and researchers for holding the largest and most diverse collections of film at any U.S. university library.  Over 560,000 audio, video and film objects are owned by the campus in more than eighty units.  Some highlights of the Indiana University Libraries’ collections include the filmmaker collections of the Lilly Library, the David Bradley collection and the Indiana University Libraries Film Archive.  The latter recently achieved membership in the prestigious International Federation of Film Archives.  To showcase these treasures the campus features a state-of-the-art film venue, the Indiana University Cinema, which screens over 150 films each semester.  In response to the potential impact of content degradation and format obsolescence, as well as advances in digital preservation, the campus is moving forward with the development of the Indiana Media Preservation and Access Center.

To complement and support the prominent role of media in the scholarly pursuits of the campus, the Indiana University Libraries seeks a dynamic, service-oriented and collegial librarian to help develop and to lead the Media Cataloging Unit of the Technical Services Department.  The department consists of two divisions:  Acquisitions and Cataloging.  The Cataloging Division (9 librarians, 3 professional staff and 28 support staff) produces original and edited cataloging copy in numerous formats, languages and scripts.  As one of three units in the Division, the West European Cataloging Section provides cataloging for continuing resources and other materials in monographic, cartographic, archival, visual material and sound recording formats.  Many catalogers also participate in non-MARC metadata projects and image description.  The Libraries’ integrated library system is SirsiDynix Symphony.
