OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
 
Under the general direction of the Head, Technical Services, and of the Chinese Language Librarian, provides bibliographic control for large collections of rare and semi-rare Chinese resources held in the UBC Rare Books and Special Collections Library (RBSCL). Creates bibliographic records in national databases according to cataloguing standards developed for rare materials; imports records into UBC's local catalogue; enriches data in imported and existing records; performs or supervises complex holdings and item maintenance; provides guidance to other project and staff cataloguers, and refers straightforward copy cataloguing work to them.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
·    Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited program in North
America, or the equivalent
·    Demonstrated experience carrying out original cataloguing and authority work on Chinese materials, using online bibliographic systems (preferably OCLC Connexion and ExLibris Voyager)
·    Native or near native level of English and Chinese languages (including knowledge of traditional & simplified Chinese characters)
·    Full knowledge of the Pinyin system of Chinese romanization

·    Knowledge of cataloguing/metadata standards and reference tools, including RDA, AACR2, and Cataloging Guidelines for Creating Chinese Rare Book Records in Machine- Readable Form
·    Familiarity with LCRI, LCSH, LC Classification Schedules, LC-PCC & CONSER cataloguing guidelines and policy statements
·    Good computer skills, including word-processing for English and Chinese, as well as knowledge of bibliographic databases
·    Substantial knowledge of Chinese literature, history and culture
·    Good organizational and project management skills
·    Excellent collegial, interpersonal and communication skills
 
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
 
Reports to the Head, Technical Services. Works closely with the Chinese Language Librarian (Asian Library), the Principal Bibliographer (Technical Services), and with librarians and staff in the Rare Books and Special Collections Library. Interacts with Digital Services librarians and staff involved in digitizing Chinese rare materials. Supervises library assistants and students in cataloguing and associated duties. Consults with colleagues as required.
 
DUTIES:
 
·    Provides original cataloguing as well as complex copy-cataloguing for rare and semi-rare Chinese materials following national standards (Cataloging Guidelines for Creating Chinese Rare Book Records in Machine-Readable Form) as well as local policies.
·    Trains and supervises library assistants and students in cataloguing and associated duties.
·    Carries out cataloguing triage, referring items that involve straightforward copy cataloguing to library assistants.
·    Provides reference assistance regarding rare and semi-rare Chinese books in the RBSCL.
 
Terms of Appointment and Salary:
 
This position will be filled as a full time one year term position.

Position Focus:

The Lewis Walpole Library is a research center for the study of the eighteenth century. Its collections are centered around Horace Walpole and his times with strong collections of books, manuscripts and prints. Reporting to the Director of the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, the Librarian is responsible for establishing a vision for the Lewis Walpole Library and setting priorities that support both Yale University’s teaching and research mission as well as scholarship about eighteenth-century Great Britain. The Librarian oversees all administrative aspects of the Library, including public services, collection development, digital collections, technical services, academic programs, exhibits, personnel management and facilities management. Responsibilities also include playing an active role in the Farmington, Yale University, and international scholarly communities. The Librarian has a generous acquisition budget to acquire books (both modern and antiquarian), manuscripts, prints and other material. The Lewis Walpole Library is committed to building on its already extensive outreach and academic programs including active research fellowship and publication programs, exhibitions, and master classes.

The Librarian develops and maintains strong ties with the University Library, Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Yale Center for British Art, Yale University Art Gallery, and faculty at Yale University. This individual develops and maintains strong relations with the eighteenth-century academic community and works closely with the Lewis Walpole Library Board of Managers, an advisory group established by the will of Wilmarth S. Lewis.


The Librarian oversees a staff of 14 FTEs who acquire, describe, preserve, make accessible, and promote the Lewis Walpole Library’s collections as well as maintain the Library’s facilities, which include both eighteenth-century buildings and a modern library located on a 14-acre property in Farmington, Connecticut.

While the position is located in Farmington, Connecticut, the Librarian will regularly attend meetings on the Yale University campus in New Haven. The individual hired must have a car available for regular travel.


Education, Skills and Experience:

Requirements include: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree, or a postgraduate degree in museum studies or a related discipline and a minimum of five years of related experience.  Preferred:  Master’s or Ph.D. in British literature, history or art history, with a strong focus on the eighteenth century.  Requirements also include demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction in a research library; experience managing staff, budgets, and capital projects; strong commitment to collection building and innovative public service programs; proven ability to articulate a vision and lead a special collections library in the twenty-first century with a clear understanding of current trends in special collections librarianship and digital humanities; strong commitment and ability to provide outreach at all levels with well-developed interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collegially with staff, researchers and colleagues.  A valid driver’s license is required.

 

Preferred:   Demonstrated understanding of current trends in scholarship in eighteenth-century British studies; experience developing innovative programs and outreach initiatives, managing historic properties, curating exhibitions and managing a publication program.

Howard-Tilton Memorial Library invites applications for the position of Research and Instruction Librarian at The Latin American Library (LAL). The library seeks to build its professional staff by recruiting talented, energetic librarians interested in shaping the future of Tulane University and New Orleans. The LAL Research and Instruction Librarian will combine a strong service orientation with collection development, outreach, and reference to ensure that the Latin American Library maintains and builds upon the high level of collections and user services for which it is renowned.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Latin American Research and Instruction Librarian develops reference services and instructional programs for the Latin American Library in consultation with the Director.  S/he combines advanced academic research expertise, information fluency, instruction and outreach with collection development in Latin American Studies.  With LAL librarians, s/he serves as liaison to relevant campus faculty, departments and programs, seeking ways to engage students and faculty with library collections, and coordinates activities with other library instruction programs on campus.  The LAL Research and Instruction Librarian also shares collection development duties including management of the book budget for Latin American Studies.  S/he serves on library committees and actively participates in national and international professional and scholarly associations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS/MA or its equivalent and advanced degree in a relevant subject area; or advanced degree in a relevant subject area and substantial professional experience in an academic library; excellent command of Spanish and English, spoken and written; substantial knowledge of the history, politics, economics, literatures and cultures of Latin America; familiarity with electronic resources and reference tools for Latin American and Iberian Studies; excellent interpersonal and communications skills and a proven record of working well in a team and with the public.  This position will be expected to keep abreast of research trends in Latin American Studies, develop expertise in emerging technologies, and participate in innovative library projects.

 

Preferred:  Knowledge of Portuguese.

About the Role

The role reports to the Enterprise Systems Operations Manager. The Enterprise
Systems team is part of the IT Infrastructure Portfolio. They are actively
looking to hire an experienced Unix/Linux Systems Administrator to join their
team. Within this role, you will oversee many of the larger and more complex
tasks and projects undertaken by the team. The role covers a wide range of
server related activities including server installation, operating system
configuration and optimisation, server performance, capacity monitoring,
system security, account administration, network printing and aspects of
application implementation and support.

Essential Skills & Experience
? High level of technical knowledge and experience with both Unix (Solaris)
and Linux (Redhat) server operating systems
? Knowledge and understanding of data network protocols (TCP/IP in
particular), and their associated services
? Knowledge and experience with data storage systems, including server and
storage hardware, tape library and/or SANs, and the ability to use complex
diagnostic tools to analyse server performance
? Knowledge of IT Security issues and trends in the areas of enterprise
servers, data storage solutions, data centre operations and IT generally
? Experience managing medium to large scale IT projects, and a sound
understanding of project management principles
? An understanding of the principles relating to change control, project
management and disaster/recovery
? Demonstrated experience in medium to large scale data centre operations
? Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, to provide technical
leadership to the team, and coach/mentor less experienced team members when
required

Must respond to requests in a timely manner with relevant information identified through conducting searches of RAC’s website, the Internet, appropriate bibliographic and informational databases, as well as by contacting identified experts in the field. Assist users in navigating the complex web of Federal agencies and foundations.
