Position Title: Cataloging Librarian

 

Job Purpose: The Cataloging Librarian works with the Head of Cataloguing to develop the long term strategic goals and objectives of the Qatar National Library cataloguing team.  Catalogues print and electronic resources and maintains authority records.  Edits and processes data files and MARC records from vendors and various bibliographic utilities .Assists with the ordering of various library materials. Supervises the copy cataloguing operations of the team and works closely with colleagues in Technical Services .Maintains the department's quality of work while employing innovative technologies and practices.

 

Key Result Areas:

Ø  Perform original and complex copy cataloging of print and electronic resources.

Ø  Ensure quality of bibliographic records through compliance with international and local standards such as RDA, MARC, AACR2r, LCSH, LCCS, OCLC, LC cataloging practices, and other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards.

Ø  Coordinates the work of and mentors the cataloging officers.

Ø  Create and maintain authority records to enable standardization. 

Ø  Assist with ordering library materials and liaise with vendors to ensure timely delivery, as needed.

Ø  Download, edit and upgrade data files and MARC records from vendors and bibliographic utilities into the Library Management System.

Ø  Upload the Qatar National Library holdings into the OCLC database to improve access to the information held in libraries around the globe.

Ø  Assist in updating cataloguing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with international standards, rules and best practices.

Ø  Provide recommendations for the improvement and streamlining of processes and workflows.

Ø  Serve as a resource person to the Qatar National Library and the Education City library community for cataloguing and acquisitions issues.

Ø  Identify training needs in consultation with the Head of Cataloguing Department.

Ø  Contribute to the profession by publishing, presenting or participation in professional organizations.

Ø  Keep abreast of developments, trends and issues in all areas of responsibilities.

Ø  Serve on designated committees.

Ø  This position includes, but is not limited to, other duties as required and defined by the scope, purpose, and spirit of the institution and are not always indicative of the title and grade of the position.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

 

Ø  Master’s degree in Library or Information Science accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent.

Ø  Minimum five years of experience in library technical services areas including cataloging and acquisitions.

Ø  Knowledge of international cataloging standards such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2R) and RDA, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), LCRIs, MARC 21.

Ø  Knowledge of digital library standards, technologies and techniques such as OAI/PMH and Z39.50.

Ø  Understanding of metadata standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, or METS.

Ø  Millennium experience is preferred.

Ø  Experience in print and electronic serials cataloging using CONSER standards.

Ø  Strong public service commitment to library users.

Ø  Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic and multi-cultural environment.

Ø  Strong organizational, analytical and communication skills in both oral and written English.

Ø  Fluency in oral and written Arabic is useful.

Ø  Ability to be flexible, open-minded and comfortable with changing responsibilities.
