Position Title: Acquisitions Librarian

 

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions, the Acquisitions Librarian assists with the development of long term strategic goals and objectives of the Acquisitions Department .Assists with the formulation of planning, policies, practices and projects relating to the acquisition of library resources .Manages the complex ordering procedures for media and electronic resources. Coordinates and supervises the work of paraprofessional acquisition staff.  Establishes and maintains relationships with publishers and vendors.

 

Key Result Areas:

Ø  Participates in the planning, decision making, and the management of the Acquisitions Department

Ø  Participates in the formulation of policies, practices and projects relating to library acquisitions

Ø  Liaises with subject specialist librarians to verify library materials requests

Ø  Provides management reports and usage statistics for subject specialists for collection analysis

Ø  Places orders for all multi-media resources for the QNL

Ø  Serves as back-up for the ordering of books, serials, and rush materials

Ø  Liaises with vendors to implement appropriate acquisitions processes in line with collection profiles

Ø  Coordinates and supervises the work of paraprofessional acquisition staff

Ø  Develops training curricula including the coordinating and delivering of training and establishes performance standards for acquisitions staff

Ø  Serves as resource person regarding acquisition issues within the Acquisitions Team, other QNL departments and others

Ø  Serves on various library committees

Ø  Perform related duties as required

Ø  Keeps abreast of new and emerging acquisitions and collection development technology

Ø  Participates in local, regional, and international professional activities

Ø  This position includes, but is not limited to, other duties as required and defined by the scope, purpose, and spirit of the institution and are not always indicative of the title and grade of the position.

Ø  Familiarize, understand and implement QF health, safety, and environment policy, procedures, legal regulations and objectives applicable to areas of responsibility. Ensures coordination with HSE department in implementing, monitoring and reviewing of HSE performance to ensure work under his/her control is performed in a safe, healthy and environmentally sound manner.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

 

Ø  ALA accredited MLS or foreign equivalent advanced degree in library or information science

Ø  Three years’ experience in library technical services, preferred

Ø  Demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple projects and assignments concurrently and effectively

Ø  Demonstrated experience in the acquisition of  all formats

Ø  Experience with print and digital serials management, commercial knowledge bases and link resolvers an asset

Ø  Knowledge of bibliographic databases

Ø  Knowledge of international standards such as RDA, Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2R), MARC 21 format, EDIFACT, and ONIX are a plus

Ø  Experience working with library materials vendors and publishers

Ø  Experience with a library management system – Millennium system preferred

Ø  Strong analytical, interpersonal and English oral and written communication skills

Ø  Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team

Ø  Ability to work on multiple projects and assignments concurrently and effectively

Ø  Ability to work in a rapidly changing multi-cultural environment

Ø  Ability to be flexible, open-minded and comfortable with changing responsibilities and duties

Ø  Knowledge of Arabic an asset
