Head of Public Services

 

Albany Law School seeks a Head of Public Services for its Schaffer Law Library. This position will join five law librarians and a full staff of seventeen in a research library of over 730,000 volume/equivalents that serves an independent, standalone law school in New York’s capital region.

 

Job Description

Supervises the public services areas and systems – including Circulation, Interlibrary Loan (and ILLIAD), Reserves, Supplementation, and Stack Maintenance. Hires, trains, and supervises library assistant staff in those areas. Collaborates with the director on collection development and selection. Maintains library access policy and other applicable use policies, as necessary. Liaises with local and regional consortia, as appropriate. Processes faculty research requests. Collaborates with Technical Services staff on availability of and access to integrated library systems, as necessary. Participates as a regular member of the Reference team. Participates on the law library management team. The Head of Public Services reports directly to the Director of the Library.

 

Minimum qualifications

Accredited MLS degree or equivalent. At least 2 years of professional experience supervising staff and students in public services functions, including interlibrary loan, reserves, circulation, supplementation, and stack maintenance. Ability to demonstrate a strong service ethic in an academic library setting. Proven ability to provide Reference service, including staffing service desks and collaborating with the Reference team, as necessary. Proven ability to contribute to a successful team environment using excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. Proven ability to interface professionally and effectively with all levels of position and responsibility throughout the law library and law school communities.

 

Preferred qualifications

Accredited Juris Doctor degree strongly preferred. (May consider three to five years of professional legal reference experience in lieu of a J.D. degree.)
