Course Description:

SEL 149     Skills for Success in University Study (4 credits)

NOTE: This posting is for the SEL 149: Research Skills Lab, a one credit portion of the SEL 149 course that deals with information literacy. The 3 credit portion of the course is posted separately.

This component of the course focuses on the information research skills, attitudes, and understandings that are foundations to university-level work.  The lab develops skills in finding and evaluating information as well as in using it effectively.

In addition, this course aims to improve students’ capacity to conduct university-level research projects, presentations, papers, and to approach the vast amount of academic information that is available to them online or in print.

 

The Research Skills Lab is organized by Concordia Libraries and taught in library classrooms equipped with workstations. The Lab has a maximum enrollment of 30 students per section.

               

Job Specific Requirements:

1.       Graduate degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association, or approved equivalent education and training acceptable for membership in the Corporation of Professional Librarians of Québec.

2.       Previous teaching experience at a post-secondary institution is an asset.

 

Additional Comments:

This research skills lab is the one-credit component of the SEL 149 course Skills & Success in University Study. It is implemented by Concordia Libraries. The lab takes place over eight weeks, starting with week 3 of the semester. There is one class per week and each class runs for 90 minutes.

Note: This is a coordinated lab that has a prescribed syllabus (outline) and materials. Instructors must adhere to the guidelines set by the Concordia Libraries lab coordinator.
