Job Summary/Basic Function:

Library Technical Support Specialists work Circulation/Reference, Inter-library Loan, and Cataloging independently to perform complex, highly specialized, technical tasks as liaisons and first points of contact with students, faculty & staff in order to facilitate and support library operations and academic programs. Incumbents are responsible for overseeing daily operations of the library, supporting library policies, and performing administrative functions/other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications/ Work Experience:

6 months to 1 year experience working in library specialized technical support with circulation, booking, inter-library loan, cataloging, and maintaining statistical reports; Ability to communicate library policy and procedures; Ability to operate library software, equipment and systems

 

Preferred Qualifications/ Work Experience:

1 year experience working in an academic library as a Library Technical Support Specialist with preference given to public services; Experience working with the automated library system, SIRSI Symphony, in the circulation, reserves, booking, and cataloging modules; Experience with inter-library loan software, ILLiad, Virtual Reference Software, Meebo, and Online Library Catalog (OPAC); Flexibility to travel to other sites if necessary

Oversee daily operations of the library and support library policies and administrative functions; oversee daily circulation operations; check library materials in and out using library systems; prepare circulation reports; follow-up on overdue materials and collect fines; handle lost and damaged materials; oversee stack maintenance; assist patrons in finding materials and with questions related to circulation policies and procedures; resolve patron problems related to circulation functions; maintain monthly and annual statistical reports; handle the borrowing and/or lending requests for library materials from patrons; provide assistance to faculty in organizing materials to be placed on reserve; process both paper and electronic materials to be placed on reserve; ensure that copyright requirements are met for all reserve items

Perform copy cataloging of library materials using the OCLC database and its utilities update and maintain bibliographic records on the library's system, Sirsi Symphony; acquire bibliographic records from electronic resource vendors and provide access through college on-line catalog; receive and process periodicals and serials in all formats using library systems and prepare them for use; identify missing items and use appropriate claiming methods to obtain missing materials; identify changes in title or status of standing order serials and periodicals and notify cataloging

Provide basic reference assistance to patrons in person, over the telephone, or on-line; provide basic information about, and general instruction in, using reference tools and databases; maintain a working knowledge of and be able to operate computer software, i.e., Word /PowerPoint/Excel, etc. to produce reports and printed materials as required and assist patrons; serve on standing committees; utilize effective communication, written and verbal, and interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources; thorough knowledge of on-line databases, system and resources, including the ability to perform complex on-line searches
