TITLE:                                                    Assistant Librarian

LOCATION:                                                         Syracuse Main Campus  

STATUS:                                                               12-Month, Tenure-track Faculty Position

                                  

 The F. Franklin Moon Library at SUNY-ESF seeks a forward-thinking librarian to serve as the Library’s central contact with the Office of Research Programs and other academic departments in support of the research efforts of the College. The candidate will provide and develop, maintain and update The Research Times electronic newsletter, web pages, social media sites, subject guides, tutorials and other learning objects related to research conducted at SUNY ESF. The candidate will also bear primary responsibility for citation research and analysis for the faculty of the College.  This position will identify needs and opportunities for collaboration with the Office of Research Programs and other academic units. In collaboration with other library staff members, this position will plan, organize and support library involvement in related activities. The candidate will also work collaboratively to explore and implement the use of emerging technologies for instruction, reference, research and assessment. This position will also participate in reference rotations, provision of information literacy instruction, departmental liaison program, and other library activities as assigned.                                                                                                    

 

 

Primary Responsibilities May Include: 

In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities required for an Assistant Librarian, the following knowledge skills and abilities may also be required:

 

·      Interact with researchers; negotiate and analyze research questions and determine most appropriate resource(s) to address the question; construct complex research strategies to facilitate patron research.

·      Utilize numerous complex research resources such as online catalogs and databases, finding aids, reference sources, technical manuals, etc. to perform job responsibilities.

·      Create finding aids for library materials.

·      Interact with researchers and provide consultation on appropriate technologies to accomplish research goals.

·      Track, compile, analyze, and interpret non-financial statistics.

·      Participate in library-wide planning and serve on campus-wide committees and task forces.

·      Active professionally and contributes to developments in the field.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited Library Science program and library or related work experience.
  • Knowledge of trends and services in academic libraries to support research programs.
  • Experience providing reference/instructional services in an academic library setting, teaching experience, or knowledge of instructional methods.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in instruction and information technologies.
  • Experience in developing tutorials and learning objects.
  • Ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with faculty, students, and academic administrators.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • General knowledge of library catalogs and related tools/resources including databases and Internet resources; directional and customer service skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment, effective organizational and time management skills.

 

 

Preferred Skills:

 

  • Experience with MS Office, Access, Internet, Email.
  • Prior academic library experience.
  • A second Masters degree in a STEM subject area.
  • Proficiency with technical protocols and systems specific to libraries such as MARC, DCRM, HTML, etc.
  • Knowledge and skills required to support Scholarly Communications efforts of the Library and the College.
  • General knowledge of discovery and delivery tools including Voyager, Encore, ILLiad, bibliographic records and call numbering systems.
  • Experience with LibGuides and RefWorks or similar tools
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Digital technology skills.
  • Some experience with the creation of metadata.
  • Data manipulation skills.

The F. Franklin Moon Library (http://www.esf.edu/moonlib/) supports the College’s specialized disciplines including biology, chemistry, engineering, forestry, environmental science, and landscape architecture. Offering over 135,500 volumes, access to more than 800 journal titles and vast electronic resources, the Moon library its collection by sharing recourses with neighboring Syracuse University, and with other SUNY campus libraries.  The mission of the Moon Library is to provide information resources to the ESF community and to teach library users to learn independently.
