WEB SERVICES LIBRARIAN

 

The Florida International University Libraries seek a student-centered, creative, innovative, and public service-oriented Web Services Librarian to provide leadership in the vision, design and maintenance of the Libraries public services online and mobile presence.  This position works both collaboratively and independently in the management of the Libraries site and various systems to enhance the end user experience by enhancing their access to information and collections.

 

Reporting to the Head of Information & Research Services, the Web Services Librarian also takes an active role in the library's instruction program, reference services, and collection development, and participates fully in scholarship and service as a library faculty member, while working collaboratively with other library faculty to meet the mission and goals of the University Library.

 

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Web Services & Content Management

      Provides vision, leadership, direction, and expertise in the organization, design and maintenance of an evolving library web and mobile presence.

      Works closely with the Emerging Technologies Librarian and the Instruction & E-Learning Librarian to plan for current and future web interfaces, technologies and innovations to the site in order to improve the Libraries web presence and to ensure compliance with web / ADA standards, University branding / style guidelines, and security policies.

      Ensures that library web reference and instruction services and applications are tailored for targeted user groups, including distance education users, campus-based users, and library staff.

      Provide guidance, training, and support for library staff involved in web content creation.

      Establish and enforce web standards and styles and maintains site organization and structure; ensures conformance to accessibility guidelines.

      Incorporate appropriate design principles, information architectures, coding standards, and emerging technologies into the Libraries various open source web-based systems and projects. 

      Engages in usability testing, analytics analysis, and other assessments of the website.

      In collaboration with the Electronic Resources Librarian, provides access to electronic resources, directing content, and managing remote access.

      Provides leadership on website policy and technical standards, and guidelines for web content development.

 

Reference

      Provides reference services, including some evenings and weekends, to diverse user groups in person, by phone, and virtually (email, chat, text/SMS, etc). 

 

 

Scholarship, Service, & Professional Development

      Participates in scholarship, faculty governance, and service as a library faculty member.

      Works cooperatively on library-wide initiatives as appropriate to position functions.

      Maintain current awareness of digital library technologies and actively participates in local, state, national, and international meetings and organizations.

 

Required Qualifications:

      ALA-accredited MLIS.

      Demonstrated commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population.

      An understanding of the role and possibilities for the use of technology in teaching, learning, and research.  

      Demonstrated experience in library website design and development, including the building and/or integration of a variety of Web applications and Content Management Systems.

      Demonstrated project management and problem solving skills.

      In-depth knowledge and demonstrated skill with HTML/CSS.

      Experience with a variety of Web development and authoring software tools.

      Familiarity with digital media technology and providing access to digitized audio, video and images.

      Familiarity with social media and Web 2.0 applications.

      Experience in applying Web accessibility standards, and user-centered design principles.

      Experience in gathering and analyzing usage statistics and web analytics related to the website and other web-based services.

      Strong leadership skills and ability to work independently, collaboratively, and in teams within the Library and University Web communities.

      Excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

      Experience with open source software, XML, and programming languages.

      Experience in developing online learning resources for instruction.

      Experience with web development applications such as Flash.

      Experience with maintaining EZProxy (or similar authentication system)
