Library Specialist I, Youth Services Librarian, North Caddo Branch Library, Vivian, LA

Full-Time

 

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, this person serves as the Youth Services Librarian and is responsible for a variety of public service & technical duties in various phases of library operations, including the exercising of judgment and discretion in performing library routines with technical advice available when needed; determines duties and methods necessary to accomplish objectives; performs related and other work as required.

 

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Applicant must have High School diploma or equivalent and one of the following:

1.       60 semester hours of successful college course work

OR

2.       At least 4 years of paid, full-time customer service experience.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Good knowledge of:

1.       standard library principles, practices and procedures;

2.       electronic and printed materials, resources, and databases. 

Preferred: experience with storytelling and knowledge of children’s and young adult’s literature.

 

Ability to: 

1.       relate and communicate effectively with other employees;

2.       make decisions based on established policies and practices, along with common sense;

3.       use resourcefulness, tact and courtesy in dealing with library patrons;

4.       understand complex oral and written instructions;

5.       be proficient on the computer with various software.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Serves as Youth Services Librarian; plans and presents children’s and young adult’s programs; presents special programs and tours as required; may make weekly visits to local area Head Start centers, daycares and schools.
  • Creates displays as needed; maintains file of programs.
  • Provides children’s and young adult’s reference/readers’ advisory assistance; assists patrons in the selection of materials and the use of other library facilities and services; answers routine questions; takes interlibrary loan requests.
  • Reads reviews of children’s and young adult’s materials and assists in selection.
  • Charges, discharges and renews books and other library materials; assesses and collects fines; registers new patrons and updates registration records.
  • Shelves books; straightens book on shelves; reads shelves for proper order of books; searches for lost books and materials.
  • Performs other necessary duties as required.

THE LIBRARY

Shreve Memorial Library System is one of the largest public library systems in Louisiana, with twenty-one branches and one bookmobile.  The library

system has combined holdings of over 665,000 items and an annual budget which exceeds $18,000,000.  The library has a staff of 250 (169 FTE). 

 

THE AREA
