Librarian - Technical Services & Systems

The GU-Qatar Library advances and supports the learning, teaching, and research goals of students and faculty while also serving as a resource for the Qatar community. The Library offers a wide range of collections and services both independently and in conjunction with libraries at the Main Campus in Washington DC.. This position manages the library’s technical services functions with responsibility for acquisitions, receiving, cataloguing, and processing of materials. The position is also responsible for development and maintenance of the library’s integrated database and software system. The position assists in providing reference services for faculty and students.

Responsibilities:

Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plan, manage, and perform library technical services functions (acquisitions, receiving, invoicing, cataloguing, processing)
  • Oversee and administer the integrated library system (shared with main campus)
  • Manage data retrieval processes and ensure integrity and quality of data from external and internal sources
  • Provide reference and research skills development assistance

Requirements:

  • Masters in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent accreditation body
  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience in an academic, research, or similar library setting with significant experience in library technical services functions and with integrated library systems.
  • Expertise in the use of OCLC and other major bibliographic utilities, current cataloguing standards (e.g. AACR2R and RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Classification (LCC), LCRIs, MARC 21, and authority control systems.
  • Knowledge of digital library standards and open source systems.
  • Strong familiarity with integrated library systems (III Millennium system in particular), discovery platforms (Encore Synergy in particular), and with systems-related standards (e.g. Dublin Core, XML)
  • Specific understanding of library operations, information delivery, library systems and software. Ability to provide desktop support as required.
  • Thorough knowledge of library technical services functions and processes.
  • In-depth knowledge of cataloguing and classification rules, standards and methods; sound knowledge of integrated library systems and interoperability of data structures; strong familiarity with data and cataloguing sources and with electronic data retrieval and transmission systems; sound knowledge of academic information systems and reference sources; strong information navigation skills.
  • Some experience in providing reference, research and bibliographic instruction services.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and facilitating collaborative relationships.
  • Must have superior written and oral communication skills, demonstrable skills in establishing and facilitating collaborative relationships, and a strong commitment to public service.
