Associate Director of the Library

The GU-Qatar Library has just moved into the new Georgetown University building in Qatar and now enjoys a greatly expanded and improved facility. The Library advances and supports the learning, teaching, and research goals of students and faculty while also serving as a resource for the Qatar community. The Library offers a wide range of collections and services both independently and in conjunction with libraries at the Main Campus in Washington DC..

This is a new position that will provide leadership and management in the development and operation of the Library. Serving as the primary point of contact for operations in one or more areas within the Library, the position will plan and implement library services, policies, procedures, and communications; participate in recruiting and developing staff; and assist in coordinating operations between the Washington and Doha campuses.

Responsibilities:
 

  • Lead the further development of functions and services of one or more units within the new library
  • Develop and implement library policies and procedures
  • Plan and implement library communications and marketing strategies and methods
  • Participate in recruiting, developing, supervising, and evaluating library staff
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate library student assistants.
  • Coordinate operations between the Washington and Doha campuses in required areas
  • Supervise librarians and library staff in a subset of core library functions to include one or more of the following areas: access services, collection development, serials & online databases, technical services & systems, digital & media services, research & instruction
  • Provide input to the Library Director and the GU-Q leadership team on the development of additional library functions and services such archives, special collections, digitization projects
  • Initiate and plan for emerging technologies and innovative ways of providing resources and services
  • Strengthen ties with Education City library counterparts, especially in relation to the further development of the Central Library
  • Participate in planning and monitoring library budgets
  • Develop library policies and procedures in designated service areas
  • Develop and maintain staff and student assistant schedules
  • Lead the development and implementation of a library communications strategy and plan
  • Collect, organize, and analyse library statistics
  • Participate in evaluating resources and services with a view to constant improvement
  • Take a leadership role in local, regional, and international library activities and organizations
  • Identify and develop ties with external library service providers and partners
  • Share library management responsibilities with the Library Director and stand in during his/her absence

Requirements:

  • In-depth knowledge of one or several areas of operation within an academic library – access services, collections, digital & media services, research & instructional services, systems and software applications, technical services.
  • MLS degree from an ALA accredited program or equivalent accreditation body; additional graduate degree in an academic discipline or business/public administration is desirable.
  • 5 – 10 years of academic library experience, including management in a senior library role. Demonstrated track record of establishing and facilitating collaborative relationships and working with diverse cultures. Must possess a record of professional participation and accomplishment.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be fully conversant with library systems and information technologies, and in particular with the III Millennium integrated library software system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office application software.
  • Arabic language proficiency would be an asset.
