Timberland Regional Library seeks an energetic, creative, dynamic, collaborative, well-organized Manager to oversee and administer Collection Services functions for the District.  The ideal candidate will have an MLS from an ALA-accredited program and 5+ years responsible experience in technical/collection service operations within a large public library system.

 

Timberland is a five-county library district in SW Washington State that serves 420,000 residents through 27 community library branches and 4 school-based cooperative library centers with a staff of 325 and a budget of $19 million.  The 7,000 square mile district ranges from the Pacific Ocean to the Olympic mountains, from Puget Sound to Mount Rainier.  The district’s service center is near Olympia, the state capital.

GENERAL PURPOSE:  Under general direction, plans, coordinates, and manages Collection Services operations, activities, and personnel for the Timberland Regional Library District.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

 

  • Oversees and administers Collection Services functions in relation to the selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing, maintenance, sharing, and distribution of library materials for the District.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and monitors the performance of assigned personnel.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of district-wide library plans and goals.
  • Coordinates with library personnel to assess collection issues throughout the District; identifies current and future departmental challenges.
  • Develops and administers departmental budget; monitors expenditure.
  • Recommends and implements changes necessary to improve services and operations.
  • Ensures staff compliance with the District’s library policies and procedures.
  • Responds to and resolves issues with vendors Provides background and support documentation to address patrons concerns in relation to collection items.
  • Serves as a member of the Director’s Advisory Council; attends and participates in a variety of board meetings and committees.
  • Leads task forces and special committees in the study of proposed changes to collection policies, procedures, and resource formats.
  • Provides support and collaboration in relation to team projects.
  • Prepares, submits, and maintains a variety of departmental reports, records, and documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience:

Master’s Degree in Library Science, and five years experience overseeing and administering technical/collection service operations within a large public library system; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Required Licenses or Certifications:

·          State of Washington Librarian Certificate is required.

·          Must possess a valid Washington Driver’s License.

 

Required Knowledge of:

·          Customer service standards and procedures.

·          Principles and practices of library science and administration.

·          Collection service operations relative to public library systems.

·          Collection management principles in relation to acquisition, development, and maintenance.

·          Methods and procedures for processing and cataloging library materials.

·          Library computer networks, databases, and software.

·          Processes for developing and administering budgets.

·          Supervisory principles, practices, and methods.

·          Principles of resource sharing.

 

Required Skill in:

·          Overseeing and administering library collection services within a large public library system.

·          Developing, implementing, and evaluating departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

·          Ensuring the delivery of effective and efficient district-wide collection services to libraries.

·          Responding to and resolving collection service related issues, concerns, and complaints.

·          Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patrons, general public, library and department staff, other library systems, volunteers, Friends organizations and Boards, vendors, outside agencies, professional organizations, community organizations and media.

·          Developing/administering budgets and monitoring expenditure.

·          Supervising, leading, and delegating tasks and authority.
