Library Associate I, Youth Services Department Supervisor, Broadmoor Branch Library

Full-Time

 

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, is responsible for a variety of public services and/or technical services in various aspects of library operations.  Performs related and other work as required.  Serves as Supervisor of the Youth Services Department.

 

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an accredited university/college.  A minimum of nine semester hours of library science or 2 years paid, relevant, full-time library experience is required.  Preferred:  experience with storytelling

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

                Good knowledge of: (1) standard library principles, practices and procedures; (2) electronic and printed materials, resources and databases.  Preferred:  knowledge of programming for children and young adults  as well as children’s and young adult’s literature.

                Ability to: (1) relate and communicate effectively with other employees; (2) make decisions based on established policies and practices as well as common sense; (3) understand complex oral & written instructions; (4) use resourcefulness, tact and courtesy in dealing with library patrons; (5) use applications software

                Preferred skills:  supervisory skills.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

1.       Branch management:  As a working supervisor, coordinates, directs and supervises all of the work of the Youth Services Department of the Broadmoor Branch Resource Center, in conjunction with the Branch Manager.

2.                               Personnel:  Assists with hiring, training, supervising and evaluating two (2) full-time and four (4) part-time

employees; fully participates in the hiring process; reviews work plans on a monthly basis; maintains effective working relationship with all staff and is available for the staff to discuss all issues as needed; completes payroll; processes and reconciles all leave requests; completes substitutes usage report; schedules substitutes as needed; covers for personnel shortages; recommends staffing needs and changes; assists with conducting investigations and resolving employee inquiries and/or complaints; keeps branch manager informed of staff/department issues; assists administrative supervisors with handling of these and other personnel matters; participates in corrective action meetings; makes informed decisions based on policies listed in the Employee Handbook; conducts monthly departmental meetings to keep staff  informed on new policies and procedures .

3.       Branch Security:  Prepare Youth Services staff to handle any emergency issues that might occur at library:  weather, fire, flood, medical, bomb threat

4.       Public Service: Coordinates, directs, and supervises the work of the Youth Services Department; plans and presents youth services programs; presents special programs and tours; maintains contacts with local schools, day cares, and head start programs; maintains displays as needed; works at the service desk which includes answering the telephone; shelving the books; reading the shelves for proper order; assisting patrons in the use of the facilities and services; answering routine questions; assists with conducting investigations and resolving patron inquires and/or complaints; assists the branch manager and administrative supervisors with handling of these matters. 

5.       Finances:  Responsible for counting Fines and Miscellaneous Receipts on a rotational basis and preparing money and reports to be sent to SML Financial Assistant.

6.       Reports:  Keep detailed records of Youth Services activities and report these to the Branch Manager

7.       Collection Development:  Participate in collection development for Children's and Young Adult collections, including magazines; responsible for regular weeding of the collections and submitting requests for new/replacement materials; evaluate patrons' requests for inclusion in the collection.

8.       Professional Development:  Attends monthly management meetings, meetings of appointed committees, and workshops and conferences; meets monthly with supervisor for work plan meeting.

9.       Other duties as needed.

PRESENT SCHEDULE [subject to change without notice]

Monday:                              1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. in summer)

Tuesday – Friday:             9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Occasional evenings and Saturdays may be required.

Will work some Sundays on a rotational basis.

Shreve Memorial Library System is one of the largest public library systems in Louisiana, with twenty-one branches and one bookmobile.  The library

system has combined holdings of over 665,000 items and an annual budget which exceeds $18,000,000.  The library has a staff of 250 (169 FTE).
