Librarian – Access Services

The GU-Qatar Library has just moved into the new Georgetown University building in Qatar and now enjoys a greatly expanded and improved facility. The Library advances and supports the learning, teaching, and research goals of students and faculty while also serving as a resource for the Qatar community. The Library offers a wide range of collections and services both independently and in conjunction with libraries at the Main Campus in Washington DC..

This position will manage the library's access services functions with responsibility for circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loans, document delivery, and stacks maintenance. The position is also responsible for development and maintenance of the library's software (Millennium) and inventory/security (3M-RFID) systems in relation to access and collections maintenance functions. The position handles library communications and assists in providing reference services for faculty and students.

Responsibilities:
 

  • Plan, manage, and perform library access services functions (circulation, course reserves, intercampus & interlibrary loans, document delivery, stacks maintenance).
  • Develop and maintain the Millennium system in relation to circulation functions (patron records, loan rules, notices, calendar) and course reserves.
  • Manage the RFID system in relation to identification cards, inventory control, and security of materials.
  • Plan and organize library publications, publicity, displays, and events.
  • Provide reference and research skills development assistance.
  • Develop policies and procedures for all access services functions.
  • Supervise borrowing/lending and collections maintenance functions.
  • Collect, organize, and provide access to course reserve materials using existing and new technologies.
  • Assist in the acquisition and implementation of equipment and room booking software systems.
  • Collaborate with Education City, Main Campus, and other libraries to further development borrowing and lending policies and processes among institutions.
  • Plan and implement advanced system features and technologies (e.g. SMS messaging, RFID/Millennium integration) independently or in conjunction with Main Campus and Education City counterparts.

Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of library access services functions and processes; strong awareness of trends and developments in library services; sound knowledge of integrated library systems, electronic data structures, and interoperability of systems; sound knowledge of academic information systems and reference sources. Proven ability to manage complex processes.
  • Masters in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent accreditation body. Additional graduate degree in a discipline area desirable.
  • Proficient Arabic and English language skills – oral and written.
  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience in an academic, research or similar library setting with significant experience in working with library access services functions. Some experience in providing reference, research and bibliographic instruction services.
  • Must have a strong commitment to academic support and public service.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and facilitating collaborative relationships..
  • Superior oral and written communication skills with a record of professional participation and accomplishment.
  • Expertise in the use of integrated library systems, particularly the III Millennium software system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office application software.
  • Strong familiarity and understanding of RFID systems and interoperability of data systems and structures.
  • Specific understanding of library operations, information delivery, library systems and software.
  • Ability to provide desktop support as required.
