Founded in 1820, Indiana University Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university with over 48,000 students and almost 3,000 faculty. The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries ( are among the leading academic research library systems in North America. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The IU Libraries system consists of twenty libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the other six campuses across the state. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 9.9 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over more than 430 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 60,000 electronic journals, and 1.4 million electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content. 


The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository.


The Indiana University Libraries seek a collaborative and service-minded individual to work alongside librarians, faculty, and university partners to initiate, sustain, and assess the libraries’ support of student learning in undergraduate courses, with a focus on learning in the first year. The Undergraduate Education Librarian will investigate and capitalize upon the intersection of information literacy, learning, and orientation for undergraduate students, with an emphasis on creating effective and sustainable connections between the libraries and targeted undergraduate learning environments and learning communities. Candidates with knowledge of student engagement, pedagogical practices, instructional design, and assessment of student learning outcomes in general education and discipline-specific contexts will be given the highest consideration. This is a tenure-track position reporting to the Head of Teaching & Learning.



·         Engage in outreach and development of partnerships to identify and support student learning within general education courses and to establish positive connections between the libraries and undergraduate students

·         Partner with subject librarians and teaching faculty to integrate information literacy into first-year experience opportunities, general education curriculum, and campus-wide initiatives

·         Develop, adapt, and assess instructional materials for use in small group, large class, and online environments

·         Help coordinate the participation of libraries in first year experience programming campus-wide, including orientation activities and welcome events for new and transfer students

·         Develop partnerships with IUB initiatives and departments such as Mosaic, eLearning Design & Services, and the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning to integrate information literacy more holistically into online environments and learning management systems

·         Promote the Libraries' culture of diversity and inclusion, and support the values outlined in Indiana University Bloomington’s Campus Strategic Plan ( and the Libraries' Diversity Strategic Plan (forthcoming)



·         ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science (MLS).

·         Knowledge of instructional design, pedagogy, and assessment principles for effective information literacy instruction across multiple platforms (e.g., face-to-face, online).

·         Experience with library instruction or other teaching experience.  Enthusiasm for working with undergraduate students and faculty, with a demonstrated commitment to meeting their information and research needs.

·         Working knowledge of current and emerging technologies and their instructional applications.  High degree of comfort in learning new software for instructional purposes.

·         Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations and a commitment to incorporating the differences, complexities and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.

·         Working knowledge of or familiarity with the principles of universal design for learning.

·         Ability to work in a team environment and build working relationships with campus colleagues.

·         Ability to meet standards for achieving tenure and promotion.
