Position: Head of Reference Department


Institution: Nazarbayev University Library, Astana, Kazakhstan


Key responsibilities:


  • Administrative and supervisory duties (supervise Reference Department staff and student assistants, staff scheduling, distributing reference duties in the department, gathering statistics and creating reports, etc.);

  • Responsible for the Library's instructional program;

  • Provide subject specialist expertise for patrons in an assigned area;

  • Act as library liaison to university faculty and staff in an assigned area;

  • Work with Head of Patron Services to coordinate day-to-day reading room operations;

  • Transfer materials to and from other departments;

  • Assist with other library work areas or committees as needed.


Business trips: Possible.


Minimum educational requirements: ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science.


Required professional experience and personal qualities:


  • At least 2 years of experience in supervisory position in a Library or information technology-related environment;

  • Strong planning, organizational, and analytical skills;

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;

  • Effective instructional skills in group and individual settings;

  • Ability to work flexibly in a team, or independently.


Preferred professional experience:


  • Experience working with vendors in acquiring e-resources;

  • Experience in an academic library.


Preferred professional knowledge and personal qualities:


  • Teaching experience;

  • Experience with work, study, or instruction abroad.


Proficiency in languages: Excellent proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of Kazakh, Russian, or other major languages is advantageous.
