Shreve Memorial Library has two vacancies, due to retirements, for Regional Branch Coordinator available.

Librarian VI, Regional  Branch Coordinator

Full-Time

 

SUMMARY:  Working closely with the Associate Director for Public Services, this is highly responsible, exempt-level, professional administrative library work, which involves supervision of several major components of the library system.  Performs related and other work as required.

 

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an accredited university/college; attainment of a graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited university; at least 4 years of increasingly responsible, full-time professional (position requiring MLS) experience including supervisory experience.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

            Comprehensive knowledge of: (1) professional library principles and practices; (2) public library functions, facilities, and operations; (3) patron needs and library services to meet those needs; (4) standard library automated system modules.

            Demonstrated ability to: (1) administer complex operations and long-range projects; (2) establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, department heads, trustees, employees, organizations, city/parish departments, and the public; (3) supervise, train, and evaluate professional and paraprofessional staff; (4) communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to groups and individuals; (5) be proficient on the computer with various software.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

§  Management:  Coordinates, directs and supervises an assigned group of regional, neighborhood and part-time branch libraries; aids the branches in achieving the goals; evaluates workflow and productivity; provides opportunities for continuing education in various areas of expertise; creates an environment conducive to communication and cooperation.

§  Personnel:  Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates branch managers; oversees all full-time and part-time employees of assigned branches; reviews work plans on a regular basis; fully participates in the hiring process including checking references of potential candidates; maintains effective working relationship with all staff and is available for the staff to discuss all issues as needed; assists with collation of weekly time-sheets; processes and reconciles all leave requests; completes substitutes usage report; schedules substitutes as needed to cover for personnel shortages; recommends staffing needs and changes; conducts investigations and resolves employee inquiries and/or complaints; serves as part of the supervisory and disciplinary chain for all public service employees; addresses personnel problems along with the Associate Director for Public Services, branch or department management teams and the Associate Director for Human Resources, Administration, and Finance; participates in corrective action meetings; makes informed decisions based on policies listed in the Employee Handbook; keeps staff and supervisors informed on new policies and procedures.

§  Facility Management:  Monitors the state of library facilities and grounds and recommends repairs or improvements as needed for assigned branches; works with branch managers on any building issues, as needed.

§  Branch Security:  may respond to after-hours security calls as needed; works with assigned managers on any security issues as needed.

§  Public Service:  Along with the Associate Director for Public Services, oversees public service programs (such as youth services and literacy programs) of assigned branches; speaks to groups and organizations with presentations on the Library's public services; works with outside groups and organizations to present cooperative programs within the library system; in concert with other coordinators and the Associate Director for Public Services, coordinates library projects affecting public service related to improve customer and staff service and suggests changes to services or new service options to explore; attends programs or public functions of branch libraries; receives, coordinates, conducts investigations and resolves patron inquiries and/or complaints; maintains working knowledge of automated services of the library system.

§  Finances:  Responsible for petty cash expenditures and travel requests; responsible for purchases using library credit card.

§  Reports:  Collects and analyzes data on the usage of library services and programs; prepares special reports.

§  Professional Development:  Attends monthly management meetings, meetings of appointed committees, and workshops and conferences.

§  Other duties as required.

TYPICAL SCHEDULE [subject to change without notice]

            Monday – Friday:        8:30 a.m. –5:00 p.m.

            Exempt position:  may require working additional or other hours as needed

 

THE LIBRARY

Shreve Memorial Library System is one of the largest public library systems in Louisiana, with twenty-one branches and one bookmobile.  The library system has combined holdings of over 665,000 items and an annual budget which exceeds $18,000,000.  The library has a staff of 250 (169 FTE). 

 

THE AREA
