Librarian II, Assistant Acquisitions Librarian

Full-Time

 

SUMMARY:  Under administrative supervision, this is responsible professional library work, which involves the application of professional library techniques and procedures in the Acquisitions Departments.  Performs related and other work as required.

 

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an accredited university/college; attainment of a graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited university.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

                Good knowledge of professional library principles and practices.

                Demonstrated ability to: (1) handle both routine operations and long-range planning; (2) establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other staff; (3) supervise, train, and evaluate support staff; (4) schedule department staff and work flow for maximum effectiveness; (5) communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to groups and individuals; (5) use application software.  Knowledge and experience with integrated library systems, especially SIRSI, is preferred. 

 

GENERAL DUTIES

Ø    Participates in all areas of work in the Acquisitions/Collection Development Department; might be acting department head in the absence of the department head if designated.

Ø    Responsible for Juvenile and Audiovisual acquisitions.

Ø    Compiles and maintains purchase lists on vendor databases for: juvenile and young adult fiction and non-fiction books, juvenile and adult DVDs, music CDs and books on CD.

Ø    Selects and orders downloadable media through Overdrive system for e-books, audio books, music and film for juveniles and adults.

Ø    Maintains budgets for each branch within the above materials areas.

Ø    Composes “Invitations to Bid” for various formats of books, media and electronic media; communicates with City of Shreveport Purchasing Department concerning bids, contracts and vendors.

Ø    Supervises and communicates with bindery companies for repair and re-binding of library materials; maintains lists of items forwarded to binderies; prepares re-bound items for Cataloging Department.

Ø    Initiates and assists all Shreve Memorial Library branches in weeding and maintaining their physical collections of books, films, music and audio CD.

Ø    Assists Department Head in orientation of new employees.

Ø    Assists Department Head and Serials Librarian whenever necessary.

Ø    Attends and acts upon decisions made at all Administrative and Departmental meetings; maintains communication with all staff within the 21 branch system.

Ø    Performs other necessary duties as required.

Monday – Friday:             8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

 

THE LIBRARY

Shreve Memorial Library System is one of the largest public library systems in Louisiana, with twenty-one branches and one bookmobile.  The library system has a combined holdings of over 665,000 items and an annual budget which exceeds $18,000,000.  The library has a staff of 250 (169 FTE). 


THE AREA
