Instruction & Reference Librarian

 

Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a full-time Instruction & Reference Librarian at its Qatar campus in Doha, Qatar, http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/. This is a twelve-month, non tenure track appointment (http://www.cmu.edu/policies/documents/Librarian.html). Term of the initial appointment is three years. 

 

Under the direction of the Director of the CMU-Q Library, the Instruction & Reference Librarian will provide leadership in the planning, design and provision of library instructional and reference services. The Instruction & Reference Librarian will have primary responsibility for delivering library/information literacy instruction through a variety of courses and projects to students enrolled in undergraduate courses.

 

The incumbent will work jointly with the Information Literacy committee to advance the ongoing development of the information literacy initiative, to determine appropriate ways to implement information literacy in the curriculum with a focus on the Business Administration, Computer Science and Information Systems majors, and to develop strategies and tools to assess information literacy skills.

 

The other major assignment of this position is to provide reference services and research assistance to all levels of library users in the social sciences, humanities, business, computer science and information systems. Reference services will combine by-appointment, drop-in hours and virtual consultations. Evening or weekend hours may be required. The incumbent may be assigned faculty liaison responsibilities in order to promote and support collection development, user education, library instruction and subject-specific research.

 

Other responsibilities include ongoing work on an archive at the CMU-Q campus and the supervision and training of library student assistants. The Instruction & Reference Librarian is expected to participate in professional development activities and may serve in library or institutional committees as elected or assigned.

 

The successful individual in this position will be innovative, flexible and able to work well independently and collaboratively. Essential to this position are a strong commitment to public service and to teaching, outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English, including public presentation skills. Fluency in interacting with students, faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and learning styles is essential.

 

Required Qualifications:

·      ALA-accredited MLS or ALA-recognized international equivalent

·      Three to five years experience in an academic setting with at least 2 years of active library instruction or reference experience

·      Demonstrated experience with instructional and reference services to undergraduate students

·      Ability to provide innovative and effective instructional services

·      Sound knowledge of electronic information resources and information technologies

·      Knowledge and understanding of ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education

·      Awareness of trends in information literacy practices, learning theory and emerging technologies in the field of library instruction

·      Ability to work positively with diverse constituencies in an environment of rapid change

·      Outstanding communication, presentation and interpersonal skills

·      Ability to plan, implement, meet deadlines and to juggle multiple tasks and priorities.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

·      Successful experience in the design and implementation of instructional programs

·      Ability to apply knowledge and technology to face-to-face and online instruction

·      Expertise in formal assessment of Information Literacy learning outcomes

·      Knowledge of archival practices

·      Second degree or coursework in a related discipline

 

This is a Library Faculty position at the Librarian rank with a comprehensive benefits package. Salary range: $40,000 to $50,000 (plus 25% foreign assignment incentive) depending on qualifications and experience. The University will provide housing accommodations and allowances, such as foreign station allowance, transportation, home country maintenance, home leave and relocation expenses. In addition, the University provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, STD, LTD and education benefits. Anticipated start date is October 1, 2010.
