LAC Group is seeking an experienced Moving Images Archivist to work on a project to gather information relating to the existence, condition and content of moving image collections in Ireland, in order to assess levels of acquisition, cataloguing, preservation practice, and digitisation and access policies across collections.  In addition, using the findings of the survey, it is intended that the project will result in a high level database of existing collections of moving image materials held by individuals, organizations and institutions across the state. This information will enable our client to assess the existing situation, analyze and forecast future needs, and inform the creation of national policy and strategy for the preservation and accessibility of Ireland's moving image heritage.

 
The successful candidate will have a demonstrable understanding of the archiving profession and cultural and educational networks in the Ireland, ideally with particular reference to audio-visual collections, and proven experience of conducting surveys using a range of data gathering methodologies (including, but not limited to, online questionnaires and original research via face-to-face communication). Information technology skills, including web-based skills, will be important. Knowledge and experience of moving image formats and web-based services are desirable.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research using existing databases, projects and resources together with original information gathering from collection holders
  • Develop a database of moving image collections in Ireland from existing lists and available data and through field research and communication with collection holders and professional bodies to encourage and assist them in providing information for the database.
  • Work closely with the Chair of the Client to define required data for collection & approach.
  • Communicate with collection holders across Ireland via a range of means including email telephone calls, and in some cases through personal visits to gather data and to solicit their input into the online database.
  • Manage the input of data gathered into the database.
  • Attend regular meetings reporting on progress and initial findings.
  • Write a report analyzing the findings of the survey at the end the project and making recommendations for future action. 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Proven knowledge of moving image formats in particular in relation to assessing their type, condition, durations, preservation and documentation standards.
  • Proven knowledge of rights and ownership issues in relation to moving image recordings.
  • Understanding of the moving image archiving profession and networks in Ireland.
  • Proven experience in conducting surveys using a range of data gathering methods.
  • Proven experience of input and use of databases.
  • Proven ability to communicate positively and effectively with a range of people/ organizations
  • Strong project management experience.
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • Excellent report writing and analytical skills.
  • High level of time-management skills.
