Founded in 1820, Indiana University Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university with over 42,000 students and almost 3,000 faculty. The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) are among the leading academic research library systems in North America. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over 900 languages. Of particular note are the 6.4-million volume high-density Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF) for preservation and access to the libraries’ collections and archives, the Lilly Library of rare books and manuscripts, and the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive. The Libraries also have renowned area studies collections and librarians who are leaders in the national conversation about the changing role of area studies librarianship. The Libraries are recognized leaders in integrating information literacy into the teaching and learning fabric of the university, and recently opened IU Scholars’ Commons and IU Learning Commons, two extensive renovations that have redefined the role of the Libraries in the academic missions of the university.
The IU Libraries are highly active in local, national and international initiatives that will define collections of the future, and are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), the Hydra community, and are a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository. IU is the principal investigator for Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE) and is working with academic library partners to develop a next generation open source library management system. Indiana University is a member of preservation initiatives such as the Digital Preservation Network (DPN,) and the Academic Preservation Trust (APTrust.) The IU Libraries have developed wide-ranging and active digital library projects and initiatives that date back to the early 1990’s, including Variations Digital Music Library, Image Collections Online, significant text collections, and most recently the university-wide Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative and the Avalon Media System. The Libraries are the organizational home of the innovative and visionary Office of Scholarly Publishing, which brings together the work of the highly-respected Indiana University Press with the Libraries’ open-access publishing initiatives.
The Indiana University Libraries seek an enthusiastic and team-oriented individual to join its executive leadership team as the Associate Dean for Collection Development and Archival Collections. The incumbent in this position articulates the vision and strategies for local and shared collections in the context of the missions and strategic plans of the Libraries, the campus and the university; allocates and administers the Libraries $14 million materials budget; and represents the IU Libraries in local, national and international fora. Reporting to the Executive Associate Dean, s/he will join 3 Associate Deans and 1 Assistant Dean on the Libraries’ executive leadership team, which is responsible for providing operational management for the Libraries as well as leadership for the overall vision, priorities and direction for the Libraries.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Associate Dean for Collection Development and Archival Collections will accomplish this mission through working relationships with colleagues throughout the Libraries, on campus, and beyond, including University Information Technology Services, the Vice Provost for Research, the Committee on Inter-institutional Cooperation (CIC,) HathiTrust, and many others. The AD for Collection Development and Archival Collections will have opportunities to explore new directions for collections by participating in high-priority, high-visibility projects such as the Office of Scholarly Publishing and the Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative, a $15-million presidential initiative to digitize all time-based media held by the university.
In addition to establishing the overall vision and strategies for collections and contributing to the leadership of the IU Libraries, the Associate Dean provides direct administrative leadership and oversight for five departments:
· Collection Development Department: This department consists of a single professional employee, the Collection Development Analyst, who assists the AD in allocating and administering the collections budget. This is done in close partnership with collection managers, Technical Services, and Public Services colleagues.
· Collection Management Department: This department consists of a department head and 20+ staff who manage, maintain and plan for physical collections in libraries and the Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF), the CIC Shared Print Repository, ALF Internal Processing and Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery services.
· Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive (IULMIA): Currently with a staff of two (the Director and a Film Archivist,) the Libraries plan to hire two new IULMIA staff: Film Digitization Specialist and coordinator for the film screening room in the renovated Media Collections and Film Archives space.
· Indiana University Archives and Records Management Department: The Director of this unit provides leadership and vision for the unit, and supervises four archivists who curate university-related records and archives, as well as Modern Political Papers and the Liberian Collection.
· Wylie House Museum: The Wylie House Museum is an important member of the Libraries’ special collections and has two staff: Director and Outdoor Interpreter.
Beyond these direct reports, the AD will work closely with the Director of the Lilly Library of Rare Books and Manuscripts, the Director of the William and Gayle Cook Music Library, and the newly-formed Libraries’ Archival Collections Working Group to guide library and campus-wide strategies for managing archival and special collections. These strategies will develop in tandem with the university-led master planning project for library spaces, a process in which the Associate Dean for Collection Development and Archival Collections will play a key role.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
· ALA-accredited Master’s degree or advanced degree in relevant field
· Minimum five years increasingly responsible relevant experience in an academic or research library
· Expertise in collections, archives and/or technical services
· Understanding of the research process across disciplines
· Familiarity with principles and best practices of managing and developing print and digital collections that support learning, teaching, and research
· Demonstrated leadership skills
· Effective supervisory and team building experience
· Experience in effective planning and budgeting
· Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain close, productive working relationships with colleagues, administrators and researchers
Preferred:
· Leadership experience within an organization of comparable scope and complexity
· Experience in consortial and multi-institutional program development
· Additional post-baccalaureate degree
