Public Services Assistant Librarians - Day & Evening

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Southworth Library and Learning Commons at the SUNY Canton is recruiting for two full-time, tenure-track Public Services Assistant Librarian positions. One position provides services during daytime hours, and the other position is responsible for professional library services during late afternoon and evening. The incumbents will work under the direction of the Director of Library Services and be responsible for performing a full range of professional library duties including information-literacy instruction, reference and public service in the Library.

Duties Include: Assisting patrons in locating and obtaining information, in person, via telephone, or electronically; providing information on library events, facilities, polices and services; explaining and assisting in the use of information resources in all formats; explaining and assisting in the use of library equipment; working effectively and collaboratively with other library staff as well as members and groups from the campus community; supervising, scheduling and training work-study and/or paraprofessional staff; coordinating bibliographic instruction, including scheduling, preparing instructional materials and/or modules, and teaching classes; sharing collection development responsibilities and serving as faculty liaison in specified departmental or subject areas; and may carry out special projects as per library strategic planning goals and objectives and/or perform related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: Master's degree in Library Science or Information Science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association, as well as the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills relevant to a diverse patron group;
  • Thorough knowledge of information retrieval theory and user behavior;
  • Superior research skills and familiarity with a variety of bibliographic and research tools;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, customer-service-oriented, team environment;
  • Dynamic and enthusiastic presentation and instructional delivery skills;
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems common to libraries and the higher education environment;
  • Superior organizational and time management skills.

Preferred:  Preference will be given to candidates possessing:  1-3 years library experience; previous work experience in higher education; familiarity with, interest in and affinity for emerging library technologies; and previous instructional delivery experience
