Head of Reference Department

 

Key Tasks:

Oversight and management of daily reference department operations;

Management and development of reference librarians and student assistants;

Development of a departmental growth plan;

Maintenance of reference use data, and analysis of the reference collection;  

Collection development of reference materials;

Collection development of the reference resources;

Improvement of reference services to meet patron needs;

Develop information literacy and instructional outreach to students, staff, and faculty;

Provide subject specialist expertise in an area of strength;

Assist with other library work areas or committees as needed;

Work at reference desk in accordance with library schedules (this may include evening and weekend hours.)

 

Education: ALA-accredited Master of Library Science, or equivalent;

Professional experience: At least four years of related experience, preferably in an academic library, that includes teaching or training, experience is required. Supervisory experience is required. A record of increasingly responsible positions in academic settings is preferred. Prior international work experience preferred but not required.  

 

Professional knowledge and personal qualities: 

Demonstrated expertise in using databases, electronic, and print resources;

Evidence of strong teaching or supervisory experience;

Strong planning, organizational, and analytical skills;

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;

Effective instructional skills in group and individual settings;

Ability to work flexibly in a team and independently;

Past professional presentations and publications are an advantage.

 

Proficiency in languages:

Excellent proficiency in English is required;

Knowledge of Kazakh, Russian, or other major languages is a big plus.

 

Computer skills:

Advanced computer user in Windows, MS Office, Internet;

Experience using integrated library systems and library catalogue;

Knowledge of electronic databases and advanced search techniques.
