THE POSITION
The San Mateo County Library System is looking for qualified candidates for the position of Librarian I/II.
The Librarian hired for this position will be responsible for:
• Providing direct public service to all users, children through adult;
• Planning, promoting and implementing library programs;
• Performing outreach activities;
• Developing the collection;
• Assisting the public within the library to use and find materials and information;
• Providing orientation and training in using library materials;
• Creating exhibits and displays;
• Writing public relations materials;
• Making community presentations and talks to groups, children through adults;
• Providing instruction in the use of computer applications, library databases and the internet;
• Training and working with volunteers; and
• Assisting patrons with library account and circulation issues when needed.
The current vacancy is located at the Belmont Library. This particular opening is for a Teen Librarian.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE We are seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking, energetic and flexible librarian who proactively seeks opportunities to make library services relevant to all members of the community. The successful candidate is excited about new challenges and is effective in communicating and working with people from a variety of backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have the ability to:
• Provide excellent customer service to all patrons in a busy public library;
• Establish working relationships with various community service providers;
• Provide in-library service to a variety of ages, including children, teens, and adults;
• Visualize, design and deliver non-traditional and innovative library services that meet the changing needs of the community;
• Plan, schedule, coordinate and carry out tasks and events such as school visits, special programs, story times, public speaking and other outreach activities to community groups and agencies;
• Work with and instruct others in the use of a variety of technology;
• Establish cooperative working relationships with the community, staff and library users;
• Work in a collaborative and teamwork setting;
• Work with diverse populations in a multi-cultural setting; and
• Assist in the recruitment, training and management of volunteers.
Also, the ideal candidate for the position at Belmont Library will focus on providing innovative services and programs to teenagers, but will also work on adult programming; will be comfortable working with, troubleshooting and instructing patrons in the use of technology; and will be comfortable working with a "one desk" service model, assisting patrons with reference and circulation.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Completion of a Master of Library Science or recognized equivalent degree, from an American Library Association accredited college or university prior to hire is required.
Experience: Candidates must have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the roles identified in the description of the position. A typical way to qualify for the Librarian II position is two years of librarian experience.

The examination will consist of an interview (weight: 100%). It may include the evaluation of a brief written exercise given immediately preceding the interview. Depending on the number of applicants an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position.
All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
