SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Schedule may include evenings and weekends.
GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, plans, coordinates, and oversees assigned Youth Services operations, activities, and personnel for the Timberland Regional Library District.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
• Coordinates and directs departmental operations and ensures the delivery of high quality youth services to children, middle school teens, families and child care providers, community youth serving organizations and the community.
• Hires, trains, supervises, and monitors the performance of assigned library personnel; ensures staff compliance with the District’s library policies and procedures.
• Prepares employee work schedules, assigns work duties, and monitors departmental work flow.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates youth and/or other programming for children, middle school teens, families and child care providers.
• Promotes library programming through the use of program brochures, event posters, electronic notifications, and personal contacts.
• Coordinates youth program activities conducted at childcare facilities and public/private schools.
• Delivers library programming including story times, book discussion groups, and other programs.
• Supervises and conducts public outreach activities for area of assignment; promotes library services and resources to educational institutions, social/health agencies, and community groups.
• Manages and maintains assigned youth services collection including weeding materials, providing collection recommendations, re-ordering materials, and processing new books.
• Creates rotating book displays and ensures the proper maintenance of youth areas within assigned library facility.
• Participates in Youth Services district-wide projects and/or training including conducting research and creating training modules.
• Develops, updates, and presents youth programming training workshops to District staff.
• Provides customer assistance and reference/readers advisory services to library patrons; conducts reference interviews and assists patrons in locating library materials and information.
• Develops and administers programming budgets, monitors expenditure, and prepares requests for program funding as assigned.
• Coaches TRL youth services providers in a designated area.
• Participates in developing library facility goals and establishing departmental objectives.
• Attends and participates in a variety of meetings and/or serves on relevant committees.
• Assumes responsibility for library operations in absence of Supervisor.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in Library Science, and two years youth services experience, including one year supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
• State of Washington Librarian Certificate is required.
• Must possess a valid Washington Driver’s License.
Required Knowledge of:
• Principles and practices of library science.
• Library operations, services, policies, and procedures.
• Processes and procedures relative to the delivery of youth services.
• Youth library programming and public outreach activities.
• Reference and readers advisory services.
• Customer service standards and procedures.
• Library equipment, computer systems, databases, and software.
• Supervisory principles, practices, and methods.
Required Skill in:
• Overseeing and coordinating youth services activities for area of assignment.
• Assisting in ensuring the delivery of high quality youth services to the community.
• Conducting public outreach activities and promoting library services and resources.
• Developing, coordinating, and delivering library programs, events, and activities for children.
• Providing reference/readers advisory services and customer assistance to patrons.
• Maintaining assigned library collections and youth library facilities.
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, District departments, library personnel, outside agencies, community organizations, patrons, and the general public.
• Supervising, leading, and delegating tasks and authority.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
• Work is performed in a library environment.
• Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 40 pounds.
• Must be able to lift, carry, and move books and/or library materials.
