Position Announcement

The University of Tennessee Libraries invites applications from highly motivated, creative, and visionary individuals to lead collection services and evolving scholarly communication/digital initiatives programs. The Associate Dean provides strong leadership for a wide range of emerging scholarly communication endeavors in the library, on the campus, and nationally. The Associate Dean is responsible for a newly formed and evolving portfolio of innovative collection services including:

  • Research Collections
  • Resource Sharing & Document Delivery
  • Scholarly Communication (Includes Trace -- UT’s institutional repository, Digital Library Initiatives, Newfound Press)
  • Technical Services & Digital Access
  • Electronic Resources & Serials Management

 

The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.

 

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is the state’s flagship institution of higher education, offering comprehensive programs of undergraduate, graduate, and professional education; research; and public service throughout the state. The University Libraries has an annual budget of more than $16 million and a collections budget of $10.2 million (includes approximately $1 million in annual endowment earnings), and employs over two hundred persons, including 44 library faculty. UT Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, Lyrasis, and the Center for Research Libraries. The library values risk taking, excellence in user-centered service, collaboration, innovation, diversity in all regards, creative achievement, and professional development.

 

Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited master’s program. Experience through increasingly responsible positions with demonstrated administrative excellence including proactive leadership, effective supervisory and budgetary skills, and the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University. Ability to thrive in an environment of change and to foster that capacity in others. Experience with collection development/management and resource sharing in the 21st century academic library environment. Experience working effectively with campus faculty and administrators. Demonstrated knowledge of technical services, digital library programs and trends in scholarly communication, the open access movement, and institutional repositories. Strong analytical and decision making skills. Professional credentials that meet or exceed requirements for tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

 

Desired: Knowledge of and ability to propose/oversee grants. Experience with operations analysis and improvement. Experience with digital library projects, electronic publishing, and evolving modes of scholarship.

 

Terms & Benefits: Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days and 12 sick leave days; choice of state retirement plan or ORP (AIG Retirement, ING, TIAA-CREF) with nonrefundable contributions paid by the University for the employee; optional group health and life insurance plans. Tuition remission is available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT employees. Salary is competitive based on qualifications. University deans and department heads are appointed with administrative stipend and 5 year (renewable) terms.
