Franklin & Marshall College seeks an enthusiastic and adaptable Science Librarian to participate in a wide range of services and professional activities, and manage a branch library, The Martin Library of the Sciences. The Science Librarian develops the collections and services that support the curriculum and research for Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environment, and Physics. The successful candidate will provide research assistance and instruction to students and will work with faculty in support of teaching and scholarship, particularly with regard to information literacy and new models of information delivery and use.

 

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Title: Science Librarian         

 

Position Summary

 

Responsible for:

·      operation and administration of the Martin Library of the Sciences

·      promotion and integration of reference, instruction and collection development services for the College's science departments

·      design of programs that best meet the information needs of science faculty and students.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

Essential Functions

 

·      Manage the Science Library building, collections, budget and services including circulation, reserves, and displays.

·      Supervise two full-time and two part-time staff, and 15-18 students.

·      Assume complete responsibility for a shared building, e.g. opening and closing, furniture, fixtures, equipment and maintenance.

·      Build and maintain a collection that supports undergraduate education in the sciences, and faculty research and teaching in Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environment, Physics.

·      Provide reference services to the science community.

·      Provide library instruction to the science community with emphasis on upper level courses and developing student information literacy.

·      Serve as liaison in support of the research and information needs of the academic departments mentioned above.

·      Serve as an effective member of the library community through professional development and service.

·      Actively contribute to the formulation of library-wide policies, procedures, goals and priorities.

         

Additional Functions

 

·      Participate in general Reference Desk service including nights and weekends

·      Maintain a close working relationship with librarian colleagues on campus.

 

Reporting Relationships

 

Job title of immediate supervisor: College Librarian

 

Titles of any part- or full-time direct reports: 1 Science Library Assistant, 1 Evening Supervisor, and 2 Circulation Assistants.

 

Requirements

 

American Library Association accredited Masters of Library Science. Undergraduate degree in a science discipline.  1-3 years professional experience in a science or special library including development of collections and programs.

 

Preferred: Familiarity with the creation and structure of knowledge in the sciences, supervisory experience, effective teaching and communication skills, strong service orientation, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, evidence of innovative leadership and creative problem solving, and familiarity with the changing information and publishing environment in the sciences. Working knowledge of Library 2.0 and other current technologies.
