Online Learning Librarian

 

Appointment Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor

Salary: minimum $52,000

Available:  January 1, 2017, or earlier if search is completed

 

The Online Learning Librarian provides leadership and vision in the development, implementation, and assessment of the University Libraries’ online learning program. In collaboration with the Libraries’ faculty and staff, the successful candidate will design, implement, and assess a cohesive suite of online learning tools to support research, information literacy, and academic integrity skills at all levels of the university. The successful candidate will collaborate with campus partners from the Office of Information Technology, the Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center, and other academic support units to ensure the Libraries’ online learning objects and instructional materials meet campus standards, are compatible with campus learning management systems, comply with adaptive/assistive technology laws and standards, and are integrated into campus-supported instructional platforms. The successful candidate will possess an understanding of instructional design principles involved in creating effective online learning objects. The Online Learning Librarian will consult and collaborate with colleagues to advance their work in creating online materials and teaching in an online environment. The librarian will have liaison responsibilities to include:  teaching information literacy and research instruction; participating in engagement activities; and providing research consultations. This position will supervise a dedicated instructional designer.

 

Specific Duties:

         Create an infrastructure of support for synchronous and asynchronous online learning at the UT Libraries

         Oversee and assess a cohesive suite of online learning tools to support students’ information literacy, academic integrity, and research skills

         Collaborate with other librarians to develop Web-based educational technologies to enhance the Libraries' research and instructional services

         Provide training and best practices to UT Libraries’ faculty and staff in the creation and assessment of online learning materials and tools

         Collaborate with IT and academic support professionals at the University to comply with standards, support university learning initiatives, and to communicate these standards and initiatives to library colleagues

         Apply current pedagogical principles to the selection of technologies, and use them to advance the discovery and usability of library resources

         Create a process for programmatic assessment of the Libraries’ online learning programs and resources

         Supervise one or more support staff position(s) to include an instructional designer

         Participate in liaison responsibilities to include: teaching research and information literacy classes; participating in engagement activities; and providing research consultation

         Serve the library profession through involvement in professional organizations and through cooperative efforts with other information professionals

         Engage in scholarly activity through publications and presentations

 

Required Qualifications:

         ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science

         Minimum 1 year professional-level experience in online or in-person instructional environment

         Experience with Web development and usability standards, tools, and practices

         Knowledge and experience in assessing student learning, particularly in the online environment

         Demonstrated commitment to fostering student learning through pedagogical best practices

         Demonstrated experience creating online tutorials

         Experience with one or more learning management systems used in higher education, such as Canvas or Blackboard

         Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to manage projects and initiatives

         Evidence of ability to engage in research, publication, and service consonant with the University’s and Libraries’ guidelines for promotion and tenure

         Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

         Coursework in instructional technology or design

         Library instructional experience

         Awareness of best practices for developing Web content conforming to accessibility standards and practices

         Experience in developing online videos or other learning tools

         Familiarity with LibGuides software
