[IFLA-LPD] RE: Activities around the Marrakesh VIP Treaty

Hi

Our current status around Marrakesh at the Blind Foundation in New Zealand is listed below. We are also starting to think about and discuss post-treaty infrastructure, with a clear desire for straightforward, automated exchange. Out of some discussions with sister organizations, queries about system readiness have been or are about to be taken to ABC. We would also like to advocate for some formal discussion between organizations pre-ratification, to help ensure smooth travelling on the journey.

NZ ratification status:

·       New Zealand's Ministry of Business Innovation & Enterprise recently published the submissions which it received in response to its consultation document on whether to ratify the treaty. It was pleasing to see there was overwhelming support shown for the MBIE's (and our) preferred option for implementation

·       The next step remains the National Interest analysis which will be submitted to Cabinet for its approval in the near future and which we know MBIE staff are finalising at the time of writing.

That may seem like slow progress, but is in fact like the release of bottled lightning in our political context.

Thanks

Chris

Subject: [IFLA-LPD] Activities around the Marrakesh VIP Treaty

Dear Colleagues,

We are all hopeful that the Marrakesh Treaty will be ratified by 20 countries and come into force very soon. This is a very exciting time, but one which requires us to look at new resources and new methods for accessing and sharing those new resources. Certainly the WIPO Accessible Book Consortium will be a major player in cross-border sharing once ratification is complete, but I am sure that many avenues for sharing will be explored.

I am gathering information on activities of our members around ratification and/or implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty.

If you are aware of, and/or involved in, activities to promote ratification either for your country or in general, please send a note to this list sharing what you're doing.

If you are making plans for implementation activities once it's ratified, please also share that information.

Thank you in advance for sharing your ideas and activities. Combining our creativity, knowledge and energies, we will all be able to better serve people who are print-disabled.

Sincerely,

Karen Keninger, Chair, IFLA/LPD
