[LIBJOBS] Undergraduate Specialist/Evening Supervisor, Manhattan, USA

Kansas State University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Evening Supervisor. The incumbent will join a team fostering undergraduate student success at K-State. The person in this position will supervise student employees who staff Hale Library Help, K-State Libraries’ primary public service point. Student employees serve as the first contact for our patrons at Hale Library Help, while librarians, professional staff, and support staff offer a second level of assistance for our access, reserves, and reference services.

 

The incumbent will manage the daily supervision of our student employees, including coordinating the training and scheduling to ensure that they offer excellent patron service and support. The person in this position will take the lead in expanding services offered by our student employees to include peer mentoring. Student employees will offer a more consultative model for students with reference questions, much like the peer mentoring offered in writing centers or in other academic support centers. The successful applicant will need to be comfortable leading the student employees through transition.

 

The person in this position will typically work Sunday-Thursday and will be the primary professional staff person in Hale Library for our evening service hours. The person in this position will also participate in outreach and engagement activities with undergraduate and community groups.

 

This is a full-time, professional position, and the candidate should have a commitment to continued professional development. To be successful in this position, the incumbent must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills to establish and maintain productive working relationships. The incumbent must demonstrate a strong user-centered service orientation. This position reports to the Undergraduate and Community Services Librarian who is the Reference Team Leader.

 

Main Responsibilities:

·         Supervise student employees, including: hiring, scheduling, and coordinating training

·         Collaborate with colleagues to expand the student employee role into library peer mentoring

·         Collaborate across department teams to ensure student employees are proficient in reference, circulation, and reserves policies and procedures

·         Provide patron-centered reference, circulation, and reserves services in a team-based environment

·         Serve as the primary professional staff person in Hale Library when working evenings and weekends, addressing issues and emergencies that may arise according to the Libraries’ policies and procedures

·         Maintain excellent communication with student, professional staff, and support staff within public services, building services, and library administration

·         Serve as a member of the Reference Team to facilitate reference projects for the department

·         Participate in orientation and outreach activities

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

·         Demonstrated experience conducting research with library resources (e.g. catalog, databases, archives)

·         One or more years working in a library, writing center, tutoring center, information commons, learning commons, or similar academic support programs in a two or four year university setting

·         Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service with diverse groups

·         Demonstrated excellence communicating with colleagues or team members

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and lead projects to completion

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

·         Demonstrated excellence creating and delivering a training or mentoring program

·         Demonstrated excellent supervisory experience

·         Experience working in a library providing assistance to patrons through public services such as in-person reference, IM reference, reserves, or circulation

·         Familiarity with the theory and practice of writing or academic support centers, learning commons, college student development, pedagogy in tutoring, educational diversity, and/or information literacy
