Job Title:                    Librarian

Department:              Library, Reese Center, South Plains College

Reports to:                 Director of Library Services


SUMMARY 
Provides public services and direct assistance to library patrons in locating, retrieving, and using information. 
LOCATION 
Reese Center  [Note: while this position is advertised as being for Reese Center, there is the possibility that it will be located on the Levelland Campus.]
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 
Assist library patrons in using the automated catalog, online databases, and other computerized indexes to locate information available on-site or externally.
Interact with and assist library patrons in person, by phone, and online.
Provide information literacy instruction to classes and other groups; this includes coordinating with other departments to arrange meeting times and locations, and communicating with faculty about scheduling.
Prepare exercises and activities for student use related to library instruction.
Create program and course-specific materials lists for use by students and faculty.  
Provide feedback about the design and function of the library Web page.
Analyze user needs and recommend appropriate information resources to patrons, including website evaluation.
Work as a public services team member to initiate and coordinate interlibrary loans. 
Generate reports of usage statistics, overdue items, and shelflists for collection maintenance purposes.
Collect and maintain usage statistics for public services.
Assist in the training and supervision of student employees.
Assist in the evaluation and development of the library collection by recommending materials for purchase and withdrawal, including electronic information such as fee-based online information services.
 
Work as a team member to assist in developing general library policy and other activities designed to evaluate, develop, and promote library services.
Supervise and assist in preparation of materials to be added to or removed from the Reese Library collection, including reserve materials; this includes cataloging and processing of items at the Reese Center Library for retrieval by patrons.
Cooperate as a team member in performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in the supervision of the work-study students and scholar assistant at the Reese Library.  Carriy out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include assigning and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems during work hours.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

A Master's degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association is required.  Two years of library experience in an academic public services position preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general reports, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
