DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY AND MEDIA SERVICES – HUSTON-TILLOTSON UNIVERSITY

The Director of the Library and Media Services is responsible for the management of the campus library and University Archives and reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. The Director develops, promotes, maintains and evaluates library services to faculty, staff, a varied student population, and the community. The Director trains, supervises, and evaluates library employees and supports the curriculum through active collaboration with faculty and staff. The position is an academic staff, twelve-month appointment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Within the framework of the University mission and governance bodies, and in consultation with the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, sets library policies, goals, and objectives;
• Administers all aspects of library services for the campus; oversees circulation, collection maintenance, service agreements, and all user services;
• Supervises all library staff and student employees; develops and provides training in conjunction with other appropriate offices (e.g., Information Technology and Human Resources);
• With the advice and active, regular input of faculty and staff, select information resources and materials to support the University’s mission and curriculum;
• Maintains; up-to-date holdings, records, and files necessary for access and inventory of library holdings; collects, evaluates, and reports data regarding the library’s collections in a timely and accurate manner;
• Maintains the library as a user-friendly, multi-media learning center; actively consults with faculty, students, and staff in utilizing library resources and developing programs to serve their educational needs;
• Maintains professional knowledge of library and information science; communicates new developments and potential opportunities to the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and campus community; maintains awareness of developments in informational technology and instructional media and their relationship to the library as a teaching and learning resource;
• Provides reference and information services to meet the needs of the University community;
• Provides instruction and assistance to students, faculty, staff, and the public in the use of various information resources and keep the University community informed of new information resources and services;
• Ensures preparation and dissemination of library-related aids for users; makes classroom presentations as requested by instructors;
 
• Continuously collects, evaluates, and reports data regarding public services, and adapts services to serve changing needs;
• Participates in a variety of University committees and represents campus issues, ideas, and concerns as appropriate; actively participates in University-wide planning activities;
• In consultation with the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Dean of Student Affairs, the Business Office, and appropriate governance committees, periodically reviews policies regarding lending, overdue charges, fees, etc.;
• Works with the Director of Information Technology and the Information Technology staff to update and expand library services;
• Plans the library budget in consultation with the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs;
• Orders materials, equipment, and supplies following University procedures and within budgetary allocations;
• Seeks funding and alternative resources to enhance the library’s ability to provide adequate collections, access to information resources, and services to the University community;
• Participates in local, state, and national library professional organizations and activities, as appropriate;
• Establishes goodwill and working relationships with a variety of external groups and organizations for the benefit of the campus;
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• An ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library Science ; experience in an academic setting is preferred;
• Two to five years of related professional, management, and supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of the higher education environment and historically Black Universities in particular;
• Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality and judgment in dealing with sensitive issues;
• Ability to interpret and apply policies and guidelines effectively and accurately;
• Ability to respond to changing priorities and crisis situations;
• Excellent interpersonal and writing skills; 
• Ability to communicate effectively;
• Ability to manage challenging situations;
• Ability to manage multiple priorities through to completion;
• Ability to solve problems effectively;
• Ability to work independently and as a team member;
• A demonstrated ability to work collegially with varied constituencies, including faculty, staff, and students.
