Project Assistant

The Ohio History Connection seeks a Project Assistant for a two-year project to increase storage capacity at the Ohio History Center in Columbus by replacing stationary shelving with mobile shelving. This position is responsible for preparing the Archives/Library stacks for construction, including inventorying, disposing, barcoding, moving and retrieving library and archival materials. The Project Assistant will work closely with the Stacks Coordinator to monitor and assist contract staff during construction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with Archives/Library collection activities including circulation, inventory, shelf reading and collection tracking.
  • Use CuadraSTAR catalog software and other databases to document holdings, add item records, track location changes and assist with stacks barcoding project.
  • Assist with stacks reorganization project, including planning, packing and moving collections.
  • Assist with assessment of library and archival materials for conservation and/or disposal.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May oversee volunteers and contract staff

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in history or library science preferred plus one year’s experience working with library or archival collections.

Proficient in Microsoft Office. Familiar with automated collection records systems and library cataloging.

Accuracy and attention to detail and deadlines. Requires refined reasoning ability with aptitude in defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Ability to manage multiple tasks.

Work Environment

Majority of the work in this position is performed in a library environment; most takes place in library stack and storage areas, with overhead lighting, and industrial HVAC air circulation system.
