Assistant Professor - Web and User Experience Librarian

Murphy Library at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is seeking a creative and savvy librarian to provide leadership in ensuring effective and positive experiences for all who use the library. The successful candidate will lead the library web team, participate in information literacy instruction, and identify and recommend user experience best practices. Responsibilities include:
  • Work closely with the systems librarian and serve as the primary liaison with campus web administration personnel.
  • Chair the library web team and facilitate changes as needed to the library website from internal requests and resulting from external CMS changes.
  • Design and conduct qualitative and quantitative needs assessments/usability studies to assess website user needs, preferences, and trends using data-gathering tools (i.e. Google Analytics, focus groups, etc.).
  • Develop, manage, and troubleshoot those parts of other library systems (i.e. discovery tools, library guides, digital repositories) where they interact with the library website including code and API development.
  • Provide technical support for peripheral applications such as social media, reference statistics database, reference chat, and others.
  • Collaborate with the information literacy instruction and instructional technology librarians to teach a significant number of face-to-face information literacy sessions based on best practices drawn from UWL user experiences.
  • Collaborate with other library units to identify and recommend user experience best practices,  i.e. work with the director on space planning initiatives, and work with other units to develop guidelines for consistent and effective messaging throughout the library.
  • Stay current with trends related to user centered design and user experience best practices for all areas in which patrons interact with the library.
  • Participate in reference services and collection development in assigned subjects.
  • Participate in collegial governance, and campus and professional activities.

Murphy Library is integral to student success at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Librarians have faculty status and are members of the library department, which is a peer-reviewed academic department. Murphy Library is administered by the library director who functions as an academic dean.

Required Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS or equivalent international degree in library or information science
  • Demonstrated experience with web development, user experience design, and classroom instruction

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional experience working in an academic library environment
  • Experience managing, organizing, and building web content using information architecture principles
  • Experience with web technologies such as HTML5, CSS, XML, PHP, JavaScript, or similar
  • Understanding how user experience concepts and best practices can be used to meet student information needs in all areas in which patrons interact with the library
  • Experience conducting web user research to understand user behavior, and using that information to inform web design
  • Experience teaching information literacy concepts in higher education
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively collaborate with faculty/staff, colleagues, and students
  • Experience working in a peer-governed academic department
  • Evidence of professional growth potential through publication, professional activities, or other contributions to the field

Degrees from international institutions will be accepted under the following conditions:

a. The degree has been recognized by the ALA as equivalent, or;

b. The degree has been evaluated at the candidate's expense by a U.S. credentialing service recommended by the ALA and received by the Search & Screen chair by February 8, 2016.

Salary and Rank: Competitive salary for a full-time, 9-month tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Partial summer contracts may also be available.

Anticipated Starting Date: August 29, 2015.
