International Studies Librarian (African, Middle Eastern, and/or South Asian Studies); Research & Library Instruction

Specialist/Expert Librarian (PLB2-4A/PLB3-5A)

 

Position Description: The University of Iowa Libraries seeks an experienced, self-motivated, and forward-thinking professional for an International Studies Librarian position. Reporting to the Head of Research & Library Instruction (RLI), the International Studies Librarian serves as the subject liaison for African, Middle Eastern, and/or South Asian studies and supports the research, teaching, and learning of faculty and students in African Studies, Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies, and/or South Asian Studies. The final assignment of subject areas will depend on the strengths of the successful candidate. Under the direction of the Head, Research and Library Instruction Department (RLI), the International Studies Librarian will assume direct responsibility for collection development, reference and research consultations, and instruction for a diverse community of faculty and students.

·                     Serves as primary liaison to the African Studies Program, Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies, and/or South Asian Studies. Develops and manages the library’s collections in the humanities and social sciences in these areas.  Responsibilities include selecting materials in all formats, working with vendors, managing budgets, and other collection-related activities. Provides instruction, workshops, credit courses, and other kinds of outreach, developing collaborative relationships with faculty, staff and students. Participates in general RLI activities.

·                     Engages collaboratively with other library staff and with relevant academic departments and program to enhance scholarship and teaching through innovative uses of technology.

·                     Participates in outreach efforts to faculty and students, encouraging positive change in the system of scholarly publishing and communication.

·                     Participates in Libraries’ initiatives outside RLI by serving on Libraries’ and campus committees and contributing to other relevant activities and events.

·                     Participates in relevant consortial activities.

·                     Maintains a course of personal professional development through active participation in professional associations or other appropriate professional activity.

Required Education & Experience:

·                     MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, and an advanced degree in a related field such as African, Middle Eastern, and/or South Asian studies.

·                     Two or more years of professional experience is required for appointment at the Specialist Librarian level; 4 or more years for the Expert Librarian level.

·                     Knowledge of current developments in scholarship and teaching of African, Middle Eastern, and/or South Asian Studies.

·                     Proficiency in Arabic, Hindi, or Swahili; reading knowledge of additional languages desired.

·                     Excellent communication skills in English as well as excellent interpersonal skills.

·                     Experience with or demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging technologies as they apply to collection development, instruction, and reference and research services.

·                     Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, creativity, collaboration and cooperation are essential.

·                     Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or community.

·                     Demonstrated interest in professional development that will enhance the candidate’s value to the Libraries, the University, the profession, or the scholarly community.

Desired Qualifications

·                     Experience selecting and managing research collections in African, Middle Eastern, and/or South Asian studies or a related area.

·                     Familiarity with concepts, trends and assessment methods related to information literacy and instructional technology.

·                     Experience teaching in a library or academic setting.

 

Salary and appointment: Start date is negotiable. Appointment will be made at the Specialist Librarian (II) or Expert (II) Librarian level, depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate. Salary ranges: Specialist Librarian $47,000 - $60,000; Expert Librarian $55,000 - $76,000.
