IMLS National Leadership Grant Project Director

This two-year term position serves as the Project Director for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)-funded National Leadership Grant, “Exploring Digital Preservation Solutions Appropriate for Small and Medium-sized College, University, and Research Libraries.” Reporting to the Director of Digital Initiatives at Northern Illinois University Libraries, the Project Director will be responsible for the day-to-day management and implementation of the grant project.

The goal of this IMLS grant is to investigate possible digital preservation solutions for smaller institutions, in coordination with an Advisory Board, and produce a report (of which the successful candidate will be the lead author) that includes recommendations for best practices at the end of the grant period. This position supervises a graduate assistant.

Given the focus on producing a final report, candidates without a visible publication history are requested to submit a 3-5 page writing sample with their vitas.

Salary and Benefits: Starting salary: minimum $50,000 per annum. The University offers a comprehensive benefits package.

REQUIRED SKILLS

• An ALA-accredited masters’ degree in library and information science or its equivalent
• Excellent organizational and leadership skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Experience leading collaborative projects successfully to completion
• Familiarity with Outcome Based Planning and Evaluation criteria
• Familiarity with the OAIS and TRAC documents.
• Knowledgeable about the Open Archival Information Systems reference model
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a dynamic team
• Willingness to travel periodically (typically monthly) in relation to grant work
• Strong working knowledge of digital preservation and digital curation practices, both open-source and vendor based
• Strong working knowledge of copyright and scholarly communication issues as they relate to digital collections
• Willingness to learn and explore new areas of digital preservation
• Ability to supervise a graduate assistant

PREFERRED SKILLS

• Strong understanding of IT issues related to digital repositories, particularly in relation to cloud-based computing
• Experience working with repository and content management platforms used with digital materials (DSpace, Fedora, ContentDm, etc.)
• Formal training in the implementation of digital preservation solutions and strategies
• Formal training or experience with scholarly communication and copyright issues
• Familiarity with digital preservation vendors and software
• Familiarity with auditing procedures as they relate to digital preservation, and the Trustworthy Repositories Audit & Certification checklist
• Experience developing policies, procedures, and best practices
