REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
PENN STATE GREATER ALLEGHENY

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applications for the position of Reference Librarian at Penn State Greater Allegheny. The Reference Librarian, as a member of the University Libraries faculty, is responsible for providing reference and instructional services to the Greater Allegheny campus community. The Reference Librarian shares responsibility with the Head Librarian for developing collections and services, participates in planning activities, and is expected to be active in a variety of service opportunities (both on campus and within the University Libraries). This is a non-tenure track renewable fixed term faculty position that reports to the Head Librarian at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Some evening and weekend work is required.

REQUIREMENTS: Requires MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent), excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Academic library experience, instructional skills, and demonstrated knowledge of academic and library applications of Web 2.0 technologies are desirable.

ENVIRONMENT:  Penn State, a land-grant institution, is a member of the CIC (Big 10) academic consortium.  In its special "Paths to Professions" section on September 13, 2010, the Wall Street Journal published results of a survey of industry recruiting executives, with Penn State named the No. 1 overall institution in the nation for producing the best prepared, most well-rounded graduates who are most able to succeed once hired.  Based on current Association for Research Libraries investment rankings, Penn State is now ranked 7th out of 114 of the largest research libraries in North America.  A Penn State student survey completed in 2010 found overall student satisfaction with the Libraries to be at the top of its category. 

The Libraries hold membership in ARL, OCLC, and CRL. Collections exceed 5.4 million volumes, including more than 109,000 current serial subscriptions. The University Libraries are located at University Park and 22 other locations throughout Pennsylvania, and they serve approximately 6,000 faculty and 44,000 students at University Park, and more than 92,000 students system wide.

Penn State Greater Allegheny has approximately 800 students; with about twenty percent living in on-campus housing.  The campus is about fifteen miles from Pittsburgh and only fifteen minutes from the new Waterfront development area.  The campus offers 7 Bachelor’s degrees, minors in 5 subjects, 3 associate degree programs, and the first 2 years of over 160 Penn State baccalaureate programs.  The campus also offers a wide variety of continuing education programs, and has close ties to the community it serves.  The J. Clarence Kelly Library is a gateway to the resources of the Penn State University Libraries system whose collection exceeds 5.2 million volumes, 69,000 serials, 517 databases, and more than 50,000 e-books.  More details about the Penn State Greater Allegheny campus can be found at http://www.ga.psu.edu.
