Assistant/Associate Dean for Collections

The Vanderbilt University Libraries seeks an experienced, creative and effective leader as Assistant/Associate Dean for Collections. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this AD will coordinate collection development activities for eight campus libraries with responsibility for a budget of $8.7 million.  It will also provide leadership and direction for the library’s off-campus storage facility (annex) and interlibrary loan/document delivery service, currently staffed with twelve employees. Leadership emphasis will be placed on guiding operational and strategic projects as well as enriching internal and external partnerships and collaborations.  The position will work with the library directors and collection development librarians to analyze and adjust budget allocations, including approval plans and subscriptions, to insure alignment with current campus research and teaching needs. It will also serve as a member of the Dean’s leadership group.

We seek an experienced library administrator with excellent organizational, strategic planning, communications, budgeting, human resources, outreach and interpersonal skills.  The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about innovations and changes in the profession as well as academic library collection development. In addition, the candidate will:

·         have significant experience with or knowledge of library collections and information resources

·         have extensive knowledge and understanding of research libraries and their evolving roles in higher education and scholarly research

·         have knowledge of the current state of scholarly communications and licensing/negotiations and  strong experience negotiating publisher contracts and the purchase of journal packages

·         have recruited, developed and retained a highly talented and diverse workforce

·         hold a Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or an advanced degree and a distinguished record of contribution to the profession and higher education.

Situated on a 330 acre national arboretum, Vanderbilt University enrolls approximately 6,850 undergraduate students and is consistently rated among the nation’s top universities.  Vanderbilt’s Graduate School offers 46 doctoral programs, enrolls approximately 5,800 graduate and professional students and awards approximately 300 Ph.D. degrees each year.  Vanderbilt ranks 20th among U.S. universities in federal obligations (i.e., awards) for science and engineering research and development, based on the most recent federal figures. A member of the Association of Research Libraries, Vanderbilt University’s Jean and Alexander Heard Library system has a staff of 193, an annual budget exceeding $23 million, over  3.5  million volumes, 3.1 million microforms, and 55,260 serials. The campus online learning system and Vanderbilt Television News Archives and several divisional libraries comprise our system.  A recent $6 million renovation to the system’s largest library has created new galleries that include digital exhibits, a café, new classrooms, group studies and a large public meeting space. Salary is negotiable, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
