San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science is recruiting an Assistant Professor in Informatics.  The successful applicant will work in collaboration with faculty in other disciplines to design 100% online graduate courses that will apply Informatics skills to specific knowledge fields (such as health sciences and/or business and/or any other discipline).  The courses will be available to SLIS students as well as graduate students in the partner disciplines.  The new faculty member will also work with partners in other disciplines in collaborative research and fundable grants.

 

The applicant should have strengths in some of the following areas:

 

Data management

Data mining and data analysis

Data organization, structures, and analysis

Data visualizations

Decision support systems

Electronic records privacy and security

Information processing to support different cognitive styles

Knowledge retrieval

Social aspects of informatics

Taxonomies

Vocabularies and terminologies

 

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at San Jose State University is fully accredited by the American Library Association through 2014. Since Fall 2009 courses are delivered only online. In addition to the online MLIS degree SLIS offers an online master’s degree in archives and records administration (MARA) and a gateway Ph.D. program with Queensland University of Technology.  The School has a rich technological environment (Desire2Learn Learning Management System, Blackboard Collaborate Web conferencing; School-wide text and video Blackboard IM; Panopto; and Web 2.0 tools).

We require an earned doctorate; a strong record of scholarly and professional achievement in some of the areas listed above; a willingness to work in a virtual environment with colleagues from different disciplines; and an excitement and enjoyment for teaching and working online. If a candidate does not hold an MLIS, the doctorate must be in library and information science or an allied field.
