Emory University Libraries invites applications for a Research and Public Services Archivist to work with internationally prominent manuscript collections including those of Salman Rushdie, Ted Hughes, W.B. Yeats, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and many more. As an active member of a collaborative team, the archivist will provide complex reference and research services by assisting researchers on the reference desk and answering remote reference questions. S/he will contribute to planning, design, and creation of digital resources designed to achieve broader access to collections, assist in maintaining and updating the department’s web presence, and serve as its public services liaison. The archivist will be involved in a vibrant exhibition program and participate in the library and campus community at Emory.

MARBL, the Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library, has special strengths in literary, southern historical and African American collections. MARBL also houses and serves as a service point for University Archives. A new strategic plan and comprehensive campaign is beginning which will expand Emory’s distinctive special collections and fund a signature state-of-the art center for the humanities at Emory. Currently, a staff of 10 FTE, fellows, and curators provide cataloging, arrangement and description, research services, instruction and outreach, basic preservation services, and organize special projects and events. Responsibilities include working with researchers and members of the public to enhance access to MARBL collections. Specifically the Research and Public Services Archivist will be responsible for:
  • Delivering complex reference and research services, which includes a Saturday rotation;
  • Contributing to digital resources designed to provide broader access to MARBL collections for a diverse audience;
  • Maintaining and updating the MARBL website;
  • Serving as the MARBL liaison for exhibits by participating in the exhibit design process, including curatorial meetings, preservation reviews, and coordinating digitization of items for exhibit use;
  • Collaborating with the Libraries’ external affairs division to promote public services events, MARBL acquisitions, and other relevant activities;
  • Coordinating digital reproduction services with the Library’s Digital Curation Center;
  • Representing Emory Libraries in and contributing to professional associations.
Qualifications: A masters’ degree in information studies or library/information science or a masters’ degree in archives management from an ALA-accredited institution is required. An undergraduate degree in history, English, or other humanities field is desirable. Experience providing reference services, preferably in an academic environment; familiarity with HTML and/or web-design software such as Drupal; knowledge of issues related to archives and manuscript collections; and experience in the areas of public services, exhibits, and/or communications are desirable. The successful applicant will have strong organizational and communication skills, an ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, and demonstrated interest in professional activities.  Must be able to lift 40 pound boxes and work in a dusty environment.
