Library & Cultural Services Director—City of Richmond, CA

Inspiration—Productivity—Success—Engagement—the Library’s pledge to the Richmond community in providing outreach, programs, facilities and services!  The City of Richmond seeks an energetic, enthusiastic and experienced leader to continue this commitment to public library service for this historic community.  Richmond Public Library serves a diverse population of 103,701 through its Main Library, two branches—Bayview and West Side—a bookmobile, and its innovative LEAP (Literacy For Every Adult Program) service.  With a $6.5 million annual budget, an active Friends organization, and the recently formed Richmond Public Library Foundation, the new director and staff (52.13 FTEs) will have the capacity to develop new opportunities for community involvement, programs and services.

 

Under the administrative direction of the City Manager and with the advice of both the Library Commission and the Arts and Culture Commission, the Director plans, organizes, coordinates and controls the programs of the Richmond Library and Cultural Services; designs, plans and evaluates the work of the library and cultural arts programs; and provides leadership and expert professional assistance to the management team and staff.  See Library & Cultural Services Director job description for the complete job description, typical duties and qualifications.

 

Richmond is located 16 miles northeast of San Francisco on the western shore of Contra Costa County—and boasts thirty-two miles of shoreline.  Incorporated in 1905, the City is best known for its unique history and role in the World War II home front effort. Today, the City is an important oil refining, industrial, commercial, transportation, shipping and government center. Minimum qualifications include an MLS from an ALA accredited library school and at least six years of progressively responsible public library experience, including at least two years at a supervisory level. The successful candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated leadership ability; strong planning and budgeting skills; and the ability to work collaboratively with public officials, employees and community groups; public speaking; and the ability to relate library and arts services to community needs.  Successful experience as a public library director or assistant, associate or deputy director, experience with public art and/or cultural programs, and experience working in a union environment are highly desirable.

 

Compensation. The starting salary range is $119,340-$134,256 (dependent on experience and qualifications) with an excellent benefits package.
