QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters degree in Library Science (MLS) required.  Must have eighteen to twenty-four months experience as a MLS professional librarian in a public library and six months of library supervisory experience. [Trainee candidates must have at least 12 months experience as a MLS professional librarian in a public library and six months of library supervisory experience]. 

CONDITIONS:

Must have access to transportation and maintain a valid N. C. Driver's License with an acceptable driving record, or obtain and present a valid N. C. Driver's License to the Library's Personnel Administrative Assistant for verification within 30 days of employment.  Background check by law enforcement required.  Negative drug test required.

DUTIES:

An employee in this position develops, coordinates and facilitates priority areas of training and development for employees. Periodically performs advanced professional library work at the information desk as needed and as schedule permits. Coordinates and conducts information literacy skills training for the public. Independent judgment and initiative must be exercised. Tact and courtesy are needed. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by review of plans, programs, reports, and in conferences. Develops training on proprietary databases, NC LIVE databases, and Virtua/OPAC. Instructs staff in using electronic resources in classes and one-on-one. Prepares and maintains instructional materials for access to staff. Helps to coordinate and present quarterly New Staff Orientation; assists in coordinating and presenting system wide Security Training with Facilities Manager and Deputy Director; assists in coordinating and presenting New Supervisors' Training with Admin Support I (Personnel). Recruits and develops staff members from various departments as trainers; involves qualified staff as trainers to help create and deliver in-house training as needed. Works closely with Director, Deputy Director, Division Manager of Marketing & Communications, and others in coordinating biannual Staff Development Days. Consults, coordinates with, publicizes, and utilizes resources from educational institutions and other outlets offering employee training opportunities. Makes recommendations for purchase of training materials and resources to the Directors Management Team or Technology Management Team. Identifies and promotes tutorials and other training materials for staff and public use. Maintains calendar of training, registration, and descriptions of training on the intranet and other library resources. Coordinates the system wide program of information literacy programs for the public. Trains staff on developing and conducting effective programs for the public. Evaluates effectiveness of training; prepares reports, conducts studies and surveys as appropriate; makes recommendations. Tracks training sessions or programs taken by Information Services and Youth Services staff. Compiles, prepares and maintains essential reports, records, and statistics. Submits a monthly activities report to the Deputy Director. Staffs a public services reference station periodically and as schedule permits in order to maintain reference skills. May seek and administer special outside grants for staff development. Actively participates in councils in order to communicate issues relating to training. Keeps abreast with professional literature, online resources, and other tools, on both state and national level, pertinent to public library staff development and training. Participates in library outreach events periodically and as schedule permits.
