Social Sciences and Data Librarian  

Kenyon College (Gambier, OH, USA) seeks a creative, collaborative and service-oriented Social Sciences and Data Librarian to provide research and teaching support to the faculty and students. As a member of the Research & Instruction department, the Social Sciences and Data Librarian serves as a liaison to Social Sciences departments (e.g. Economics, Sociology, Political Science) and related departments (e.g. Math) providing collection development and instructional support. The Social Sciences and Data Librarian serves as a resource for students and faculty working with data sources and software common to Social Science research, and as a partner with the other liaison librarians and college departments (e.g. Center for Innovative Pedagogy, Math-Science Skills Center). The Social Sciences and Data Librarian will provide leadership and expertise in supporting library services related to the discovery and use of the emerging trends pertaining to research and data tools, primarily in the social sciences.

This position is a newly redefined role. The successful candidate will shape the position, take a leading role in the development of an integrated set of data services, provide leadership for the development and implementation of Kenyon College Library initiatives that assist faculty and students in navigating government information and data-related issues, including data discovery, analysis, visualization, and management.

Required:

ALA-Accredited Master's degree in library and information science or equivalent.

Two years relevant experience as a librarian.

Experience providing research assistance in an academic library including research/ reference service and library instruction.

Demonstrated strong analytical and teaching skills.

Demonstrated knowledge of software for statistical analysis including but not limited to SAS, SPSS, Stata, R, Minitab, and Tableau applications.

An understanding and knowledge of current and emerging trends in social sciences and government data.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Strong public service orientation.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively on teams.

Work schedule will require evenings and the occasional weekend.

Preferred:

Undergraduate/Graduate degree in sociology, political science, public policy, economics, statistics, or math.

Excellent technological skills, especially in managing and manipulating quantitative and qualitative data.

Experience with electronic resources, information technologies, and collection management.

Experience with existing and emerging social science research tools, methodologies, and resources (especially data visualization and government information.)

Experience using mobile devices, social networking, and other forms of technology to deliver information services to library constituents.

Working Conditions: Normal library working conditions.
